What is psychology?
WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? The scientific study of human behaviour
WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? Year 12 Memory- why do we forget? How accurate are our memories? Social influence- why do we obey authority? Why do we like to fit in? Attachments- looking at the importance of early years Psychopathology- understanding mental health illnesses suh as depression, OCD and phobias Research methods- how do psychologists carry out research?
WHAT WILL YOU STUDY? Year 13 Relationships- how do we decide who to form a relationship with? Schizophrenia- what causes this disorder? What are the most effective forms of treatment? Addiction- what kinds of things can you become addicted to? Biopsychology- how does the brain work? What the impact of brain damage? Issues and debates- does free will exist? Research methods
INTRODUCTION TO MEMORY One of the topics you ll study next year is memory. You ll look at how memories are made and what the explanations for forgetting are. You also look at how accurate eyewitness testimonies are and the factors that affect their accuracy.
DO YOU TRUST YOUR MEMORY? Watch this video Are you surprised?
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? The fact that you cannot trust your memories and that research has shown how we can implant false memories has massive consequences. For example, what about eyewitnesses? People at the scene of a crime, who saw someone commit a crime- should we trust their testimony? Do they ever get it wrong? Lots of documented cases of eyewitnesses getting it wrong with massive impact- article
RESEARCH ON EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY In psychology, theories must be backed up with research. Psychology tries to be as scientific as possible, and often uses lab experiments- like you use in science. Except we do our experiments on humans! Elizabeth Loftus has spent 50 years doing research on memory and eyewitness testimony.
READ THROUGH THE RESEARCH Read the summary of Loftus s research on the handout provided. What does this tell you about the accuracy of eyewitness testimony? What does this tell you about psychology?
EVALUATION Evaluation is an important skill in psychology It s when you identify strengths and weaknesses with a theory or a piece of research. Look at the handout and practice your evaluation skills!
REFLECT 1. Is psychology what you expected? 2. What did you learnt today? 3. What do you want to learn about next year?
