Public Health Clinical Placement Program at Oakland County Health Division
This program aims to enhance clinical placements for nursing students, address challenges in recruiting new nurses, and collaborate with universities to provide valuable public health experiences. Through internal and external assessments, the program identifies areas for improvement and works towards building stronger relationships between universities and clinical sites. The research component focuses on aligning placement expectations with learning objectives to enhance students' public health knowledge and skills.

Objectives Building relationships with universities for clinical placement How to be a clinical placement site Decrease the burden on the clinical site
Background More and more students/universities requesting clinical placements Difficulty recruiting new nurses Decrease funding No designated staff over program 15 different programs in the health division with different supervisory staff
Internal Assessment No additional funding for students Students were more likely to be interested in Public Health Nursing if they had a clinical rotation at one of our sites No internal policies regarding students No set format when a request for placement occurred Nursing students identified they needed more information about public health services No prioritization of programs/requests occurred
External Assessment Universities were having difficulties placing students in their community/public health experiences Each university had different expectations and requirements for placements Student placements requests came from both individual students and universities Students were not always supervised
Research Met with universities: Reviewed syllabus, objectives of course, projects required and prerequisites Reviewed Capstone project requirements Many universities will have a list of projects Discussed expectations of clinical placement What did we as a public health agency think students need to learn?

Example-Procedure Oakland County Health Division Clinical Experiences Shadowing/Observation Clinical Faculty on site Traditional Clinical Faculty on Site Preceptorship/ Immersion /Capstone Faculty Not on site Student identifies an interest in public (community) nursing. Student request to participate in a public health experience to learn more about community nursing. Description of Clinical Experience Faculty member oversees a group of students in a clinical community setting. Faculty member oversees a group of students in a clinical community setting. Goal is more of an overview of Public Health Principles and specific course objectives. I. Sessions (1/2 DAY) II. Sessions (1/2 DAY) Experience could be provided to meet the course, learning outcomes, objectives or special project. Clinical experience occurs for 1-2 Days Only Days/Times to Be Determined (TBD) Student must complete a specific # of clinical hours. Times and Frequency Clinical experience occurs for a complete semester. Set days and times. Faculty and students are on site (1) day per week. OCHD Provides Education/Overview Public Health Services Public Health Programs Community Nursing Community Nurses to provide opportunities for students to shadow during in-home visits.
