Explore the primary suggestions for literature reviews by Webster and Watson in 2002, evaluate Tarafdar et al. with respect to these suggestions, and delve into the role of literature in theory building. Discover how researchers prepare for data collection and analyze data inductively to contribute to theoretical constructs. Gain insights into making theoretical contributions to the literature.

  2. Student Presentation 1

  3. Questions What are the primary suggestions of Webster and Watson (2002) for the undertaking of literature reviews? Do they make any suggestions that you disagree with? Why? Evaluate Tarafdar et al. (2019) with reference to the ideas/principles in Webster and Watson 2002).

  4. Guiding Questions What is the role of literature vis- -vis theory? How familiar does a researcher need to be with the literature before building a theory? Sourcing constructs in the literature Creating theoretical arguments based on the literature What are systematic and structured reviews? How can we synthesise prior research? How can we make theoretical contributions to the literature?

  5. Readings for Next Week Davison, R.M., Wong, L.H.M., Ou, C.X.J. and Alter, S. (2021) The Coordination of Workarounds: Insights from Responses to Misfits between Local Realities and a Mandated Enterprise System, Information & Management 58, 8, 103530, 1-12. Meng, T., Ng, E. and Tan, B. (2022) Digital Attrition: The Negative Implications of the Sharing Economy for the Digital Options of Incumbent Firms, Information Systems Journal 32, 5, 1005-1033.

  6. Questions for Next Week How do the authors of each paper prepare for the collection of data that they will later analyse inductively in order to theorise? What techniques do the authors use to analyse their data and how does this lead to the identification of theoretical constructs? What kind of theory are the authors contributing to? How new and interesting are the theoretical arguments in each paper?
