  1. An Introduction to Ramadan By Bishr Mohamed, revised by Abby Rotwein

  2. What is Ramadan? Ramadan is a holy month of fasting in the Islamic faith. This month is an opportunity for Muslim people to take a break from their normal routines and dedicate themselves to their religion. Muslims are fasting meaning they don t eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. Observing Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, the five duties that are obligatory for every Muslim.

  3. When do people eat during Ramadan? Family normally gathers together to eat in the early morning before the sun rises. This is called Sahour. When the fast is broken after sunset it is called Iftar, which means breakfast.

  4. When is Ramadan? Ramadan is celebrated around the Lunar calendar. A Lunar month is either 29-30 days, which means that Ramadan is celebrated anywhere from 29-30 days. This year, 2023, Ramadan is celebrated from March 22nd to April 21st.

  5. What else is important to know about Ramadan? Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint and self-reflection. Fasting is seen as a way to cleanse in the soul and have empathy for those in the world who are hungry and less fortunate. Muslim people go to work and school and take care of their usual activities during Ramadan; however, some also try to read the entire Quran (the Muslim holy book), say special prayers and attend Mosque (Muslim place of worship) more frequently during this time.

  6. Eid Mubarak means Blessed feast/festival. You can say this to your Muslim friends this month to honor their celebration.
