Random b1 effects in 2015
After 6 weeks of operation, the orbit and correctors at injection and in the ramp show promising control. The study focuses on the evolution of corrector kicks, snapback effects, and orbit changes in both horizontal and vertical planes. Notable observations include rapid kicks in the horizontal plane, stable behavior in the vertical plane, and significant orbit shifts due to snapback. The mean kick shift in the vertical plane indicates systematic changes in beam position across the arc.

Random b1 effects in 2015 J. Wenninger FIDEL - random b1 07/03/2025 1
Orbit and correctors After 6 weeks of operation the orbit is well under control at injection and in the ramp. One can now use the information stored in the orbit corrector kicks (with well corrected orbit) to extract some interesting effects. For this analysis only the 60A MCB correctors were used as they are in the core of the arc and within a nicely regular lattice. There is clearly more out there FIDEL - random b1 07/03/2025 2
Corrector kick evolution in the ramp Evolution of the kick RMS in microrad (wrt injection) Evolution of the mean kick in microrad (wrt injection) H Progressive increase, saturates ~4-5 TeV Progressive shift H V V FIDEL - random b1 H Fast increase in first ~50 seconds H V V 07/03/2025 3
Random b1 snapback Very clear and rapid rise of kicks in the horizontal plane over ~50 seconds - smells like snapback of random b1. RMS kick 0.7 microrad effective correction of 6 MBs. o This fits well with the observation that the orbit drifts a lot and rather rapidly in the horizontal plane just after reaching the injection level. The vertical plane is rock stable at injection. Cannot remember having seen this in run1, but maybe masked but other things or did not look well enough. o FIDEL - random b1 07/03/2025 4
How much orbit Unfolding the 60A kick changes one can estimate the orbit change due to the snapback: 0.3 mm rms (1 mm peak). The real snapback is a bit larger since the CODs of the DISS are not included here. FIDEL - random b1 07/03/2025 5
And in vertical In the vertical plane the mean kick shifts down by -1.5 microrad. o This mean kick corresponds to a vertical position shift of the beam at the BPMs of 250 microns systematically over the ENTIRE arc ! It is always in the OUTER aperture ! S56 S67 S78 S12 Kick change FT-injection Blue = MCBV FIDEL - random b1 S81 S81 S23 S34 S56 07/03/2025 6
