Read Visual Clues If forwards decide to press, midfields must step up with them If forwards decide to slide and remain compact, midfields must slide and remain organized as cover Defending as a unit
Angle of Approach Angle Adjust your body position so you can tell the OPP where to play the ball How to Press when Defending Travel Quickly If a ball is played into wide areas press immediately due to high reward low risk and the out of bounds line acting as a second defender Travel Body Positioning Having an open body position so you can see where your team are helping you and the other team s possible passing options Positioning
Create Space Combine Can you make runs that help create space (pulling a defender out of their position) and unbalance the backline When the ball is playing into you, can you combine (set, give and go, play ball into space) and create scoring opportunities How to Play as a Forward Follow Up Always look for opportunities to score (following up shots, rebounds, deflections)
High Positions Always try to play as high as possible, it will force the OPP to mark you, it also stretches the field and creates passing lanes Attack Space How to Play as a Wingback In possession can you look to attack the space and unbalance the opposition, if the ball is played to you on an overlap, attack the space Unbalancing Movement Once you ve been marked, can you now move that OPP away from the space you want to attack, this movement must be fast and dynamic
Connection Receive the ball with an open body position and always looking to play forward How to Play as a Defensive Midfielder Retaining Possession Playing the ball back to the defensive line or playing the ball out to the wingbacks Providing Central Opportunities When playing out the back make yourself available with an open body position as the best option to play forward
