  3. Real Property Assessment Relief On August 8, 2022, the Governor signed into law an increase to the household income limit for real property assessment relief for vulnerable low-income taxpayers. Senior Citizens Persons with Disabilities The new household income limit of $50,000 provides for a 50% assessment reduction. The previous income limit to receive the maximum assessment reduction of 50% was $29,000. There is a sliding scale for greater income amounts, which yields lower reductions in assessed valuation. A reduction in assessed valuation potentially leads to a reduction in property taxes paid. Each taxing jurisdiction independently decides the amount of assessment relief to grant. Currently the East Islip School District income limits for the maximum assessment relief of 50% are $29,000 for senior citizens and $18,500 for persons with disabilities. 3

  6. Real Property Assessment Relief A reduction in assessed valuation potentially leads to a reduction in property taxes paid, however the amount of taxes levied by the school to the Town of Islip remains the same. Assessment relief shifts the tax burden from those taxpayers granted the relief to those taxpayers not qualifying for the exemption. Based upon assessment relief currently in place, there are 304 exemptions for senior citizens and 10 exemptions for persons with disabilities. The total assessed valuation exempt under the current scenario is $5,054,843 for senior citizens and $128,385 for persons with disabilities. 6

  7. Real Property Assessment Relief Known versus Unknown The Town of Islip previously set the income limits for both exemptions at $29,000 for town taxes. If the Board of Education were to consider increasing the maximum income limit for persons with disabilities from $18,500 to $29,000 the impact would be negligible to the rest of the tax base. At this time, there is not sufficient data available for the Board of Education to project the impact to the rest of the community of increasing the current maximum income limit for senior citizens. More information will be available next year, when the tax rolls are adjusted for those homeowners qualifying for assessment relief based upon the new limits set by the Town of Islip. The Board of Education can revisit this topic on an annual basis. 7
