Real-Time Pilot Initiative for S2S-ERA Forecast Application Development
Explore the S2S-SERA Real-Time Pilot Initiative aiming to identify methods for producing and evaluating application-oriented forecasts to support National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. The initiative involves engaging producers and users to provide feedback on the products' value in various sectors. It also includes projects in the humanitarian sector focusing on different variables and spatial coverage.

S2S-SERA Real Time Initiative Aim: Identify methods to produce and evaluate application-orientated forecasts and tools, to derive a broad set of best practice guidance that can support NMHSs to pull-through S2S research into operational products. Scope: Real-time data available for 2-year period (end 2019 2021) to a select group of producers/researchers who have identified and engaged with a specific user or group of users. Both parties (producers and users) will be required to provide regular feedback on the engagement process they are using, the products provided and their value and use in the context of their sector.
S2S-SERA Real Time Pilot Initiative Desired Outcomes: 1. Synthesis report outlining what is required to make the forecast data usable, from both a developer and user perspective, and how this varies across different sectors, different organisation within sectors and organisations with different levels of expertise. 2. Review of engagement strategies used between researchers, NMHS s and users through the development of user-orientated S2S applications. Identify components of the S2S value chain (including appropriate metrics) and co-develop a critical understanding of what knowledge is needed for end-to-end user applications. 3. 4. Paper/report synthesising the outputs from the S2S-SERA real-time pilot work
S2S-SERA Real Time Pilot Initiative 25 projects identified (based on responses from questions sent to S2S mailing list) Nearly all projects needed greater clarity regarding the end user focus. Some projects did not go forward (either due to timescales or their sector/user (e.g. private sector companies)) [7 projects in this group] 18 projects invited to provide EOI-style responses from project owners. Received 16 EOI responses!
