The GPIR collaborative project, funded by NORAD, aims to revisit the relationships between growth, poverty, and inequality in Africa. By analyzing past milestones and upcoming research phases, the project seeks to advocate for pro-growth redistributive strategies to address the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on poverty and inclusion.

Reexamining the Growth, Poverty and Inequality Relationships in Africa (GPIR) collaborative project: Special Session of AERC at IEA World Congress Njuguna Ndung u Executive Director of AERC July 4, 2021
About the GPIR collaborative project The GPIR project, funded by NORAD is a sequel to one of the most successful collaborative projects of AERC undertaken in late 1990s and early 2000 : Poverty, Income Distribution, and Labor Market Issues in Africa . This project for example influenced the design of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers that were adopted across Africa. Over the last two decades, poverty declined in Africa but not at a pace to have deep impacts. The number of the poor increased (Figure 1) Hence the need to revisit the growth-poverty-inequality relationships with options for redistributive policies.
Milestones achieved so far/1. Framework research phase Kick-off meeting was held in June 2019. Global and regional experts participated and completed 14 framework research papers, of which are the five selected for the IEA session. A synthesis paper based on these framework papers was presented at Senior Policy Seminar held in March 2021 World Development agreed to publish some of these papers in its special issue. The AERC Program Committee determined the theme of the December 2021 and June 2022 will be Growth, Poverty, and inclusion in times of Covid-19 pandemic
Milestones achieved so far/2 Country case studies phase Over 140 proposals by African researchers through an open call are currently under review of which 10-15 will be selected. Project coordinators for this phase of the project were selected and a project steering committee is being constituted.
