Luke 5:1-11 Calling of the first disciples They had already met Jesus through John the Baptist (John 1) They had (probably) heard him teach in Capernaum synagogue (Luke 4) He had healed Simon s mother-in- law and many in the town (Luke 4)
Peter was reluctant because Inconvenient had already cleaned nets A. Tiresome had worked all night B. Bad strategy better to fish at night, and not in deep water Embarrassing taking fishing advice from a Rabbi carpenter C. D.
Remember the future They gave up everything they had (including the miraculous catch!) and followed Jesus. Went from following Jesus around, to being a follower of Jesus. Catching people alive , fishing for (wo)men keeps us fresh. FROM NOW ON a moment that changed him
Luke 22:54-62 Background: At the last supper Jesus tells Peter that before the rooster crows he s going to deny him three times and Peter emphatically insists that he won t. They got out to pray with Jesus and fall asleep. Judas leads a mob to come and arrest Jesus and we pick up here
Remember the present This is another moment that changed Peter s life. That moment when he denied Jesus for the third time, the rooster crowed and (above all) Jesus looked right at him. He goes outside and weeps bitterly! Since becoming a follower of Jesus, have you ever wept bitterly? Either because of your own sin or someone else s. Did it change you?
