Ottoman Reforms Ottomans saw they were falling behind Europe, had to catch up 1839-1876- Tanzimat Reforms Meaning Reorganization Moderate: Did not go very far More liberties to minorities Improved and modernized education, industry, etc New modern army replaced Janissaries Promote Ottomanism to stop ethno- nationalist revolts

Young and Restless Young Ottomans Secret society for more radical change 1876: Kicked out the Sultan, took power, and created a Constitution and a Parliament 1878: New Sultan, Abdul Hamid II, kicked them out and restored the mocarchy Young Turks Nationalist party of educated elites 1908: Young Turk Revolution overthrew Sultan and again made a constitutional democracy

Ottoman Reforms Young Turks Infighting within the group led to three key members, the Three Pashas , taking total control over the government (1913-1918) They allied the Ottoman Empire to Germany in the Great War and were the leaders responsible for the Armenian Genocide As the Empire collapsed due to war and poor leadership, Kemal Ataturk stepped up to lead the new nation of Turkey
