Propane for light commercial segment can be considered as most sustainable refrigerant because of both, direct and indirect emissions With 150g of propane charge it s possible to cover most of unitary, plug-in applications An international effort to increase HC charge limit in -89 standard to cover all plug in range with single circuit solution is in progress Page 3 /13

Details about TC61/SC61C/WG4 Initiation of WG4: According to decision 20 of the Tokyo plenary meeting of IEC SC61C on 13 November 2014, (IEC 60335-2-89-A2/Ed2: Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-89: Particular requirements for commercial refrigerating appliances with an incorporated or remote refrigerant unit or compressor) WG4 was established to discuss the increase of the limit for the filling amount of flammable refrigerants. Members of the WG4: 23 Members out of 13 countries (AT, BE, BR, CZ, DE, FI, GB, IT, JO, JP, NZ, SK and US) Page 8 /13
What issues are under discussion within TC61/SC61C/WG4 GB proposal: Maximum charge of flammable refrigerant 0,500 kg 2 levels for increasing the current limit of 150 g flammable refrigerant one level up to 300 g and second level up to 500 g flammable refrigerant For these 2 levels different tests and measurements would be necessary like mechanical impact test, vibration (transport) test, Drop test, minimum air flow, leak simulation test, . DE proposal: Maximum charge of flammable refrigerant 26 m x LFL e.g. with the LFL 0,038 kg/m of R290 = 0,988 kg The DE proposal was based on the relevant parts of the IEC 60335-2-40. In detail this standard has normative requirements to service operations, ventilation requirements, secondary circuits, Current issues under discussion: Requirements for tubing, hermetically sealed system, symbol for minimum room size, leakage tests and CFD simulation, sources of ignition, adjacent appliances, Page 9 /13
What direction is TC61/SC61C/WG4 going The risk with more than 150 g flammable refrigerant must be the same as we have with the current limit of 150 g In detail and in our proposal of the WG4: The maximum charge limit for flammable refrigerant 26 [m ] x LFL [kg/m ] Refrigerants which are lighter than air (e.g. R50) should be excluded For appliances with more than 150 g flammable refrigerant Determination of gas concentration might be necessary Minimum air flow for appliances between 8 x LFL and 26 x LFL should be required The airflow should be guaranteed in any operating conditions No refrigerant-containing parts should be exposed to the outside of the appliance Low temperature solder alloys will be not accepted for pipe connections All electrical components should be non-sparking electrical apparatus Application should have a tested tightness control level of less than 3 grams per year Page 10/13

Possible time scale of TC61/SC61C/WG4 The current proposal of WG4 61C/671/DC is circulating in the IEC National Committees and the closing date is 2016-08-12 Time scale for including the WG4 proposal into the IEC 60335-2-89: August 2016 :Closing date of WG4 proposal with feedbacks from the NC October 2016: WG4 meeting and SC61C meeting in week 40 (4thto 8thof October 2016) with work on the compilation of comments on the WG4 proposal 61C/671/DC Q4_2016: Creation of a CDV out of the compilated comments Q3_2017: Discussion of CDV and creation of a FDIS Q2_2018: Publishing of the 3rd edition from the IEC 60335-2-89 standard Page 12/13
