Establishing Lighting Best Practices and Educational Programs to Achieve Deep Energy Saving, An Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) regional collaboration with university lighting centers and research institutions Lighting consumes about 25% world energy use but can consume up to 33% of the energy used in developing economies. Retrofitting our existing building stock with highly efficient lighting is one of the most effective ways to achieve deep energy savings and rapidly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Buildings energy consumption constitutes one of the largest contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and has been targeted by many APEC economies as a priority opportunity. 2
Establishing Lighting Best Practices and Educational Programs to Achieve Deep Energy Saving This project will support a two sequential workshops to be held along-side an APEC Expert Group on Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EGEEC) meeting that would bring together representatives from university lighting design centers and leading researchers and government representatives from APEC member economies. The workshops will address both the development of best practices and unified education programs in multiple APEC member economies. Enhancing Regional Conformity Assessment to Ensure Successful ISO 50001 Standard Outcomes In collaboration with a Clean Energy Ministerial project team, this project will focus on building regional capacity to improve conformity assessment and ensure successful implementation of the ISO 50001 standard. The ISO 50001 international energy management system standard is a key strategy for increasing the competiveness of APEC economies. ISO 50001 has a dual focus on the development of an energy management system and data-driven improvements in energy performance. 4
Project Scope This project will support two or more workshops, along with several preparatory webinars and other technical expert exchanges proposed to help design and implement regionally consistent but nationally appropriate action plans for building ISO 50001 auditor capacity and the consistency of ISO 50001 conformity assessments. Joint project with the Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC) Cost: Total $550,000 APEC Support fund: $250,000 Co-sponsors: Canada, China, Chile, Mexico, Indonesia Project start date: May 2015 Project end date: December 2016 5
Project Outcomes A set of implementation principles for implementing regionally consistent personnel certification schemes at the national level for ISO 50001 Auditors Action plans designed by government representatives and key national stakeholders like accreditation and certification bodies to implement new personnel certification schemes or transition existing schemes at the national level based upon agreed implementation principles New or enhanced national personnel certification schemes implemented in APEC economies Individuals, including women, will be certified to be ISO 50001 Auditors 6
