Regional Database Overview for Supporting State of Stocks Index
Explore the details of a regional database on catch, effort, and biological data presented during the ninth session of the FIRMS Technical Working Group meeting. Learn about database ownership, structure, quality, and access policies for improved fisheries monitoring and resource assessment.

FIRMS Technical Working Group Meeting - Ninth session, Rome, Italy and Online, 10 13 December 2024 Template for Partner s informing on Regional Database on Catch, Effort and biological data for use in support to State of Stocks Index (SoSI) Doc. FIRMS TWG9/2024/3 Replace the above title Template for Partner s by the NAME OF INSTITUTION REPORTING and NAME OF THE DATABASE PUT IN THIS FIELD THE NAME OF PERSON REPORTING FIRMS-Secretariat@fao.org
Database ownership Regional Organization: Name of Regional database Components of the database List any relevant sub-component component of the database x 2
Database Structure Database name / component If needed, duplicate this Slide/table for important components that would need to be described separately Temporal coverage Enter here the start year and current end year which the database covers in terms of available time series. Inform if certain variables have notable distinct temporal coverage Geographic coverage and resolution Extent of water area covered (e.g. the RFB competence area), extent of Countries involved in contributing to the database Geographic resolution What type of areas / geographic system used for the reporting of the variables. Are these standard geographic coding systems of CWP Temporal resolution Year, Quarter, Month ? Resolution of fishing units What criteria used to discriminate the fishing units and compile the variable measured, e.g. Flagstate, Geartype, Vesseltype, Art/Ind, motorization, etc. Variables measured (catch) e.g. Catch, landings, Variables measured (effort) e.g. Capacity (number of vessels), Effort (days at sea, number vessels involved in fishery, hours fishing, gear specific effort measure , etc.) Variables measured (Biology) e.g. Length frequency, maturity (please specify species for which measure applies) x 3
Database Quality Database name / component If needed, duplicate this Slide/table for important components that would need to be described separately Amount of gaps in the database coverage compared to objective set for the database This is to respond to the question: to which extent are available time series consistent and usable in fisheries monitoring or resources assessment e.g. major dataseries missing for a specific country in certain years Amount of alignment with other reference databases This to give a sense of consistency and coverage of the regional database in respect of e.g. FAO s global fisheries database: could it be said that aggregated figures of catch or effort of this regional database and FAO database are i) comparable in principle, or ii) actually comparable in order of magnitude Any other indication enabling to evaluate database quality 4
Database Access and Sharing policies Database name / component If needed, duplicate this Slide/table for important components that would need to be described separately How often is the database updated Is the database published, at which frequency and time of the year Can the database be made available to regional assessment working groups If no, explain why this is not possible If yes, explain the conditions that should be met for sharing Can the database be made available to FIRMS upon biennial datacalls for supporting SoSI and added in FIRMS Annex2 Explain if this is possible, what would be the conditions for that Is there a policy governing the access and sharing of the database 5
