The purpose of senior secondary education To live life to the full To reflect on meaning, pursue interests, keep learning To enrich working life To find stable employment, develop careers, build businesses To encourage active citizenship To engage in community, civil society and polity
The need to re-imagine tertiary education The distinction between higher education and VET is becoming ever more elusive The border between higher education and VET is increasingly porous The same 21stCentury skills and attributes can be gained and demonstrated in higher education or vocational training or structured workplace learning
Our challenge To stop demarcating types of education by privileging skills of the head over skills of the hand and skills of the heart To recognise multiple learning pathways beyond the AQF To integrate practical and theoretical knowledge moving from dual sector to single sector for example, an NSW Institute of Advanced Education
Five things that can be done 1. Encourage career advice and guidance for life Careers NSW 2. Open up ATAR as a university ranking tool Allow students to include more vocational subjects 3. Promote school-based vocational certification Enable students to complete Cert II or Cert III 4. Ensure senior secondary school assessment measures the whole person Introduce a Learner s Profile Linked to a digital education passport 5. Get serious about putting students at the centre
