Objectives At the conclusion of the lesson, students should be able to: explain the ideas of republican government, the common good, and civic virtue state some advantages and disadvantages of republican government explain why the Founders thought republican government was the best type of government for the country describe how the ideas of the republican government were promoted
Characteristics of a Republic Citizens have the power to govern. Citizens delegate their power to leaders they elect to represent them and to serve their interests. Citizens and their representatives work cooperatively to promote the common good rather than their own interests.
Benefits of a Republican Government Representatives are elected to serve the common good. It is more efficient to allow representatives to make the laws. The people have a say in their government. The representatives are responsible to the people.

Disadvantages of a Republican Government Republican government works best in small communities. The people in the republic have to be very much alike- diversity is a hindrance. Factions must be kept out of the republic.
James Madison and others felt that a republican form of government would work better in America than a direct democracy. The new kind of government would be called representative democracy; a government in which the people would choose their leaders, and safeguards could be put in place to prevent abuse of power . Two key Elements of Republicanism Common good: Doing what is best for the community, state, or country rather than promoting self-interest. Civic virtue: When citizens and elected leaders were willing to set aside their personal interests for the common good.
