Research in microbiology involves inductive and deductive methods, with a focus on qualitative and quantitative approaches. Inductive research starts with data collection to generate hypotheses, while deductive research begins with theory-driven hypotheses. Qualitative research centers on understanding experiences through non-numerical data, while quantitative research emphasizes measurement and testing using numerical data. Both methods aim to describe, explain, predict, and control observed phenomena, contributing to a systematic inquiry in the field of microbiology.

  1. Research approach Microbiology Fourth Class 2022-2023 By Dr. Khetam Habeeb Rasool

  2. What is Research? Research Definition: Research is defined as a careful consideration of study regarding a particular concern or a problem using scientific methods. According to the American sociologist Earl Robert Babbie, Research is a systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict and control the observed phenomenon.

  3. Research methods Research involves Inductive , Deductive and Mixed-methods 1- Inductive research methods are begin with a research question and the collection empirical data which used to generate hypothesis and are associated ,with qualitative research . Qualitative research Refers to research which focuses on collecting and analyzing words (written or spoken) and textual also used when the research aims and objectives are exploratory in nature. Qualitative research designs are used to understand experiences and perspectives through non-numerical data. Qualitative research is based on a constructivist approach the belief that instead of focusing on a single reality, researchers will seek the perceived reality of participants.

  4. Research methods This method involves collecting rich, non-numerical data through different potential methods. This method include the researcher interviewing participants, conducting focus groups and observing participants. Example of Inductive Reasoning: Observation: Pet dogs in my neighborhood are friendly. Observe a pattern: All observed dogs are friendly. Theory: All dogs are friendly.

  5. Research methods 2- Deductive methods are begin with a theory-driven hypothesis, which guide data collection and analysis, deductive methods are more commonly associated with quantitative research. Quantitative methodology: Is typically used when the research aims and objectives are confirmatory in nature , focuses on measurement and testing using numerical data. Quantitative methods measure and analyze numerical data to better understand the relationships between variables. The overall purpose of quantitative research designs tends to be to generalize results.

  6. Research methods These types of research designs are based on positivist beliefs that a single reality can be found through the use of experimental designs and testing of scientific hypotheses. This method will usually involve collecting data through standardized measures that allow for the collection of numerical data, such as questionnaires or psychometric tests. Example of Deductive Reasoning: Theory: All dogs are friendly. Hypothesis: All pet dogs in my neighborhood are friendly. Test hypothesis: Observe all dogs in the neighborhood. Conclusion: 7 out of 23 dogs in the neighborhood were not friendly= Reject the hypothesis.

  7. Research methods 3- Mixed-method : methodology attempts to combine the best of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to integrate perspectives and create a rich picture.

  8. scientific research method or approach What is the scientific research method or approach? The scientific method is the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation. The basic process involves making an observation, forming a hypothesis, making a prediction, conducting an experiment and finally analyzing the results. The principals of the scientific method can be applied in many areas, including scientific research, business and technology. The video outlines the stages of the research method and they are explained in more detail next week.
