IMPORTANCE OF CONCESSION PARAGRAPH Begin this paragraph by admitting that there are some who do not accept your thesis, and that there is the possibility for holding a different point of view. Provide one or two reasons for holding such a point of view, reasons that work against your thesis. BUT you need to end that paragraph with a sentence or two suggesting that this reason for holding an alternative point of view is ultimately wrong Find a way to undermine this concession and return your reader to your point of view at the end of your paragraph of concession.
SAMPLE CONCESSION It is true that some rock music contains lyrics that are both provocative and rebellious. In fact, one form of rock music, punk rock, concentrates purely on antisocial subjects as a basis for its songs. However, rock music itself is not enough to make a teenager rebel against society. Even though some lyrics contain hints of social rebellion and moral decline, the average teenager does not take this seriously and concentrates more on the musical value of the songs rather than the inner meaning of the lyrics. In conclusion, I feel that even though lyrically rock music shows hints of anarchy and social rebellion, it is not a threat to society. Source: Rebecca Caplan's Writers in Training

SAMPLE CONCESSION Certainly, grades do serve as a powerful motivational tool for students. The fear of failure gets otherwise disengaged students to complete their work, and the desire to receive excellent marks (A's) motivates good students to push themselves to do their very best work. It is also true that grades contribute to a productive classroom environment that benefits the entire group; students who know they will be graded down if they don't have their homework done tend to come prepared, thus improving the quality of class discussions. On the other hand, the positive motivational effects are overpowered by the negative impact of competition between students. Students who don't earn those A's often feel like failures, even though they have learned a great deal. What is gained from the B is often lost in the desired an A. Often students compare their grades with others in an effort to see how they rank. This relative status has little to do with how much an individual is actually learning. In short, we must find another way to motivate students that puts the emphasis on learning rather than on the delineation of winners and losers.
PURPOSE OF CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH Conclusions do not merely restate the thesis, and they should never begin with "In conclusion " Last chance to outline importance of your argument: Emphasizing the purpose and importance of your essay Explaining the significance or consequences of your findings Indicating the wider applications of the method developed in your essay Establishing your essay as the basis for further investigation To show other directions of inquiry into the subject
SAMPLE CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH [Restate Thesis & Revisit Value of Essay] It is clear that the only acceptable way of ensuring that voter fraud does not take place is to issue voter ID cards to all United States citizens. [Review Main Points] These cards would screen out those who are not citizens and would also eliminate people from voting under another name or voting more than once. Most important, they would ensure that elections are fair and valid. [Leave Reader Thinking] Only by instituting a voter ID card system can the U.S. make certain that elections are fair and voters voices are being heard on an even playing field.
PEER EDIT Using the rubric read through your partners paper Using the post it notes write down any changes or areas you think they need to revisit Provide one strength of their paper and at least one area where they should revise their paper
