  3. GOALS/OBJECTIVES Goals/Objectives Pose a research question/hypothesis formation Navigate literature review Participate in a collaborative process Design a study (understand the methodology of your study) Statistical analysis Abstract and/or manuscript drafting Scholarly dissemination

  4. PROJECT SELECTION Project Selection Interesting Achievable Rigor (finding the right balance) Process vs Product Vetted vs non-vetted projects QI A word about specialty-specific projects

  5. PROJECT SELECTION Project Change Projects must be approved/vetted by an oversight committee You must have a major protocol or selection change approved Reach out once you know you are making a major shift to get approval

SCHEDULE/DEADLINES Schedule of activities/deadlines PGY1 o CITI Training (IRB) should be completed at this point o Lectures geared toward project planning o Early Fall-Research book distributed o October 20- Research Fair o December 1-Mentor/project selected o January 15-Timelines and protocol drafts are due o June 1- IRB submission (if not already approved)

IRB A few words about IRB submission You must have IRB approval to start your project MyResearch website IRB always takes longer than anticipated give yourself plenty of time and anticipate extra time to obtain signatures (chair, IT, etc), submit revisions, etc Check on MyResearch frequently to know status of application, signatures, who the coordinator is, etc

  8. CITI TRAINING CITI Training Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Must be completed to do any research here at Stony Brook Create a login (store somewhere for future use) Send certificate of completion to Orietta Miceli-Ortiz

  9. SCHEDULE/DEADLINES Schedule of activities/deadlines PGY2/3 o Meet regularly with your mentor o Meet at least 2-3 times per year with liaison o Submit regular updates to liaison (cc mentor) o Research rotation during PGY2 year o Feb/March approved abstracts due if presenting in May o April-announce poster vs platform o May-research day

RSOC Resident Scholarship Oversight Committee (RSOC) Comprised of 13 Faculty members, Dr. Blair & Dr. Milana Approve project/mentor selections Members serve as liaisons to trainee/mentor team Provide feedback, oversight, accountability Please respond to and cc your liaison on applicable emails regarding research

RSOC LIAISON Role of the RSOC liaison Additional layer of oversight Collaboration/feedback Provide mentorship and another perspective/feedback on your project For those struggling or with very busy mentors, it is built-in oversight, accountability and deadlines For those working on schedule or ahead, it is an opportunity for peer review and suggestions for scholarly dissemination of work Please respond to and cc your liaison on applicable emails regarding research

  12. COMMUNICATION Communication and Professionalism Graduation requirement Deadlines o Project selection o IRB submission o Progress report updates o Abstract submission/revisions o Presentation or Poster submission Response to Communication Research rotation meetings
