FantsuamFoundation--Background National political instability -longer an more destructive effects at the grassroots Recovery takes longer in rural communities due largely to their relative isolation from the political and resource centres of governance Over 60% of Nigeria s population of 190 Million, live in rural areas The most accessible means of internet access is the mobile phone In spite of the high cost of access, the quality of service are poor
What Makes Community Networks Resilient? Community- Fantsuam Foundation By 2011, the FCN was the nearest affordable point of the internet for 7 unconnected rural communities The network had a full complement of VSAT, solar powered Network Operating Centre, highly trained and motivated staff supported 3 tertiary institutions, 2 banks, several small businesses and 1 public hospital
What Makes Community Networks Resilient? Community Fantsuam Foundation The sectarian crisis -loss of human lives, relocation of trained staff and loss of expensive equipment. The FCN was the only surviving communication infrastructure as the various satellite services had shut down or been vandalised or destroyed.
