Delineating (responsible) supply chain Delineating (responsible) supply chain management management External supply chain versus internal value chain: supply chain management deals with managing intercompany relationships along the supply chain, while value chain management optimizes the value creation intracompany, from the inside of a business through its value chain. Beyond procurement: supply chain management should not be mistaken for merely a task of the procurement or purchasing department. While these departments play a crucial role in establishing a contract-based relationship with suppliers, true engagement throughout the supply chain goes much further than an economic exchange of goods for money. NOT merely about suppliers: managing a company s suppliers is only the upstream part of supply chain management. The often forgotten downstream part consists of managing the relationships from direct clients to the final end-consumer. 4 Laasch, O. & Conaway, R. (2016). Central characteristics of sustainable supply chains Central characteristics of sustainable supply chains Triple-bottom-line supply chain management: sustainable supply chain management needs to optimize the overall triple bottom line from supplier to consumer. Extended chain of responsibility: this term describes how responsibilities migrate from a single company s stakeholders to all stakeholders along the supply chain. Circular: Circular refers to a movement of goods and services not only from supplier to end-consumer, but also a movement back from the end of the supply chain to its beginning in a recycling fashion. Stretched: Stretched supply chains refers to second-order supply chains that consist of a higher share of renewable and recycled inputs and products in the same chain. 7 Laasch, O. & Conaway, R. Sustainable supply chain management tools Sustainable supply chain management tools Sustainable supply chain standards assure that social and environmental issues typically encountered in international supply chains are addressed in a responsible way. Fair-trade and inclusive supply chains both include poor suppliers in a company s supply chain. In practice, both approaches are closely connected, although there are minor differences in the underlying approaches for involvement. Green supply chain management focuses on the environmental impact of supply chains in both production and transportation, and the environmental impact of transportation and the topic of responsible logistics 11 Laasch, O. & Conaway, R.
