  1. TIMOTHY: DISCIPLE AND DISCIPLE-MAKER Lessons for us

  2. A thought exercise 1. I was (or am) being discipled by __(name)__________. 2. I am discipling ___(name)______________

  3. A Clarification What is a disciple? A learner who learns by hearing and heeding; by precept and example. I.e., an apprentice

  4. Plan for this session: Two parts to our time together. We will look together at biblical texts that depict: 1. Timothy the disciple, 2. Timothy the disciple-maker.

  5. Timothy the disciple Already converted when Paul discovered him (Acts 16:1). Son of a mixed marriage: believing Jewish mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (2 Timothy 1:5; cf. 2 Tim 3:14-15) and a Greek father (Acts 16:2). Recruited by Paul for his second missionary journey and made culturally acceptable to local Jews by circumcision (Acts 16:3).

  6. Timothy the Disciple Called brother or fellow servant in salutations in various Pauline letters: namely 2 Corinthians1:1, Philippians 1:1, Colossians 1:1, 1 and 2 Thessalonians 1:1, Philemon 1:1. Timothy received 1 and 2 Timothy where Paul calls him his child or son in the faith (1Tim 1:2, 18; 2 Tim. 1:2) Addressed as man of God in 1 Tim. 6:11.

  7. Timothy the Disciple Perhaps a bit timid, fearful, or diffident? (2 Timothy 1:3-8) Likely not too robust physically? (1 Timothy 5:3) Exceptionally Christ-like: Philippians 2:20-22. Along with Epaphroditus and Paul, he reflected the mind of Christ.

  8. Conclusions and lessons If your calling is to spiritually feed (disciple) a child or grandchild, imitate Lois and Eunice and do it! (2 Tim. 3:14-15) If Timothy with his challenges can be an exemplary disciple, so can you and I. So can unlikely candidates for Christlikeness. One has to be a disciple before one can make disciples because by definition discipling others is fundamentally a show and tell exercise. Further observations or comments?

  9. Timothy the Disciple maker Strategies commended by Paul to Timothy that we can and should imitate. Pray (2 Timothy 1:3). Guard the gospel (2 Timothy 1:14). Imitate Christ and those who closely follow him, and in this way model the gospel (1 Cor. 4:16-17; 11:1; 2 Tim. 1:13; Phil 2:1-8; 1 Tim. 1:15-16; 1 Tim. 4:15-16).

  10. Timothy the Disciple maker Entrust the gospel (2 Tim. 2:2). Entrust the church to faithful elders (1 Tim 3:1-7) Think and act corporately (1 Tim 3:14-15). Command and teach the gospel (1 Tim. 4:11). Think eschatologically, i.e., with the second coming in view (2 Tim. 4:8, 18).

  11. Concluding lessons You and I are constantly being discipled by someone. Who is discipling you? You and I are consciously or unconsciously discipling others. (Who is watching you?) Who comes to mind as someone you might pray about discipling Prayer
