Restorative approaches in prevention. TARGETED YOUTH SERVICES SUNDERLAND.
Offending in residential Care. 2015 Joint Protocol, Together children, YOS, police, care homes. 13% in 2014-5 Sunderland compared to the National average of 5.0% in 2019/20 reduced to 2.9% in Sunderland which was in line with the National average of 3%. Focus on joint working, restorative response, diversion. Diversion panels consider the voice of the child, the wishes of the victim and the wider circumstances/concerns. Reduction in YOS involvement and change in ethos- less formalised more restorative response.
Restorative approaches in schools. Exclusions for offences/ASB in schools lead to increased risks for young people. Restorative response as an alternative behaviour management system. Attempts- individual school approach-lessons learnt. Violence Reduction Unit Funding. Whole school approach/ RJC training.
Restorative approaches in schools continued. RJ in schools Pilot- Year 1 & 2. Two schools. First year findings- Covid!!!. Improved communication. Targeted, training and support to schools. Joint working, EH and Public health. Charter Marks. Anti-bullying and risk taking behaviours. Next Steps. Peer mentors, sustainability, transitions. Questions?
