The retirement of WADO-WS API, recommended by WG-27 and WG-06, is justified due to the enhanced functionality provided by DICOMweb. This decision does not create any gaps as the features are now included in DICOMweb. Sections related to WADO-WS have been retired, and specific modifications have been made to remove WADO-WS content from relevant sections in the DICOM Standards. The rationale for retirement emphasizes the active maintenance of IHE XDS-I, where WADO-WS API was originally designed. Retiring WADO-WS does not restrict its usage, but the documentation for retired features will not be maintained by the DICOM Standards Committee.

  1. Supplement 198 Retirement of WADO-WS Developed in accordance with work item 2016-12-B.

  2. Rationale for Retirement IHE XDS-I is where the WADO-WS API was originally designed and is actively being maintained. It is self-contained and does not need DICOM to manage it. WG-27 and WG-06 have both recommended retiring WADO-WS from the standard. The functionality provided by WADO-WS is now included in and enhanced by DICOMweb, which seems to be much better accepted by the development community. So, retiring WADO-WS does not leave a gap. Note: "Retirement does not imply that these features cannot be used. However, the DICOM Standards Committee will not maintain the documentation of retired features. The reader is referred to earlier editions of the Standard." (PS3.1, Section 1.4.2)

  3. Sections Retired For retired sections: The Section header remains, and the phrase (Retired) is added at end of header The contents of the section are replaced by the phrase See PS3.X-2017x .
