Purpose of Travel? Jesus and His disciples were going to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover There Jesus planned to reveal Himself as the Messiah (John 12:23) There He would be killed and thus draw all men to Himself (John 12:32)
Direction of Travel? Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem from the EAST They first walked uphill for about 13 miles to Bethany They ascended almost 3400 feet
Direction of Travel? Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem from the EAST They left Bethany and walked 2 miles across the Kidron Valley They descended 2500 feet then ascended 2500 feet to the Holy City
Why is this Important? Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim and they stood still at the entrance to the east gate of the Lord s house. And the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them.(Ezekiel 10:18-19) God s glory left the temple because of the apostasy/abominations of the people. For their sins the Jews were removed from Jerusalem/God s temple for 70 years - Babylonian Captivity
Why is this Important? And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city, and stood over the mountain [Olivet] which is to the east of the city. (Ezekiel 11:23) God s glory also left the city because of the apostasy and abominations of the people.
Why is this Important? And the glory of the Lord came into the house [the temple] by way of the gate facing toward the east. (Ezekiel 43:4) The temple would be rebuilt and the glory of God would someday return from the east. Now Jesus, the glory of God, has returned to the city and temple from the east and Olivet.
Why is this Important? And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming. (Malachi 3:1) The Jews had lost their place by abandoning God and His commands. They were longing for a Messiah-King who would deliver them from sin and restore the temple and their status.
Why is this Important? And they brought it [the donkey] to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as He rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. (Luke 19:35-36) And Jesus came forth; not as a warrior, but as the Prince of Peace.
Why is this Important? As He was drawing near, already descending the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of His disciples began to rejoice and praise God is a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying
Why is this Important? Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to the highest! (Luke 19:37-38)
Jesus BIG Claim And He entered the temple and began to cast out those who were selling, saying to them, It is written, And My house shall be a house of prayer , but you have made it a robbers den. (Luke 19:45-46) T He showed His authority over the operation and practices of the temple .
Jesus BIG Claim What sign do You show to us, seeing that You do these things? Jesus answered destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up. (John 2:18-19) T He has power over death. He has restored the connection between heaven and earth. He is the restored temple here on earth (God with us) & glory promised by God in Ezekiel s prophecy.
Jesus BIG Claim I say to you that something greater than the temple is here. (Matthew 12:6) T This is Jesus response to why His disciples were picking and eating grain on the Sabbath. He is greater than the temple and its practices, His work takes priority over the law and Sabbath.
Mode of Transport? Jesus sent His disciples to procure a donkey for Him to ride into Jerusalem Why now, after all that walking?
Jesus BIG Claim Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious and riding on a donkey, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9) It was foretold a Davidic king would come & restore the connection between heaven an earth, and the glory of God to the temple. The Jews were waiting and watching for his appearing.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war hoses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. (Zechariah 9:10) This gentle King will at a future time end warfare and establish His peace on earth.
Jesus BIG Claim Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices. They shout joyfully together; for they will see with their own eyes when the Lord restores Zion. (Isaiah 52:8) Jesus was arriving in plain sight.
Jesus BIG Claim I am a great King, and My name is to be feared among the nations. (Malachi 1:14)
Jesus BIG Claim I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever. (Psalm 145:1) This King will arrive humble and riding on a donkey. He will not fight like David, but will allow the powers of the world to overwhelm Him, and then swallow them in His great ocean of forgiveness and divine mercy. In this way He conquers the enemies of Israel and emerges as the True King of the world (Christus Pantocrator)
Jesus BIG Claim Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross. And it was written, JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek (John 19:19) Pontius Pilate was the 1st evangelist of Jesus as King, for he posted a sign in 3 languages (Hebrew, Greek and Latin) naming Jesus as the King of the Jews.
