FICA Issues for Students o CUNY has issued new guidelines regarding FICA exemptions for students o The Research Foundation discovered that it is not qualified to issue FICA exemptions to students o Problem for PhD students funded through grants administered by RF o About 80 PhD students affected (others are exempt from FICA by virtue of their visa status) o By September 29 we will move the affected students to College TL payroll (reimbursed from grants) to maintain FICA exemption. o Fringe rate will be 2% (same as RF GRA appointments) o Appointments will be to GRA and GRB titles o Note that GRA appointees can not have any other appointment in CUNY o Ultimately all PhD students will be moved to College payroll (reimbursed from grants)

Year of Sustainability & Environmental Justice o The President has designated 2019-20 as the YoSEJ, highlighting the broad spectrum of work in this area across campus o President+Provost will support department/division colloquia and seminars on related topics o Send short (few paragraph) proposal and budget to provost@ccny.cuny.edu o Minimum 6-weeks before event to allow Communications to be looped-in. o CPS launched Climate Policy Fellow program for UGs o Kickoff event: Climate Roundtable Thursday September 26 4:30-6pm SH350 o The State of the Climate: Science, Economics and Policy. Jonathan Pershing, Former Special Envoy for Climate Change at the U.S. Department of State

SEJ Gen Ed Course o Jorge Gonzalez (ME) & Yana Kucheva (Sociology) are planning a Gen Ed course for spring semester focused on campus work on sustainability & environmental justice. o No pre-reqs meant for everyone (Gen Ed Science badly needed) o Lectures from faculty across campus on their work o Please encourage your faculty to volunteer to give a lecture
