INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION We chose the project that involved improving the Port of Bairnsdale. As locals would know, there are barely any family friendly areas in the town and the Port has always been due a renovation. We asked some family members that have lived in Bairnsdale their whole life and they said that the Port was always very sketchy, unwelcoming, and a place they would rarely go. We would love to give the Port another chance and rebrand it, so that it no longer has its bad reputation.
OUR VISIONS OUR VISIONS We are getting rid of everything that is there. We re starting fresh. Modern BBQ and eating areas New, improved and more open floating jetty Better lighting (solar powered) Accessible bins, drinking taps and water bottle filling stations Playgroup and outdoor gym equipment Walkways and hiking paths Undercover area Pedestrian access from the top of the hill (paths, stairs and ramps) New toilet block Wider, better, and more parking Leash free enclosed space for pets Better CCTV
THE GEM Once this space is usable and has been revived, our idea is that every 2 months during summer and spring, there would be a twilight market to bring the community together. There could be local food businesses, music, lights, and other market stalls or businesses. The Port is already by the river and once its rejuvenated it would be quite pretty and would bring in quite a crowd.
THE SOLUTION Our solution addresses the challenge by making the Port of Bairnsdale more accessible and creating a more lively, safe and family friendly area. We believe that this is the best option because it s inclusive, family-friendly, and generally a really gorgeous and relaxing area.
HIGHLIGHTS Courtney Making posters with he group Ayla Being shown around the tip Mali Learning about the different jobs we can do that are involved with the shire council. Emily Working together with a group to make something meaningful. Lisa Working with a group that really care about the community and who want to make a change. Sherry Being shown around the town and learning how much the shire looks after and does.
CONCLUSION We believe that our ideas could lead to the Port of Bairnsdale becoming a much better place for the community and bringing people together. We would like to thank Broadening Horizons , The Hub , and the East Gippsland Shire Council for providing us with this wonderful opportunity, helping and supporting us along the way.
