ALIVE IN CHRIST Conversion is important (11) Having established the supremacy of Jesus, Paul now emphasises the enormity of what Jesus did at the Cross for us It seems there were people in the church who were saying that true believers must be circumcised as a ritual declaration of how seriously they took their faith In Galatians Paul dealt with this issue when people were teaching that it was essential for salvation (it isn t!)
ALIVE IN CHRIST Conversion is important (11) Paul says that Jesus has already circumcised them spiritually ( made without hands ) In Deuteronomy 30:6 we see that even in the OT circumcision was an outward sign of what God would do with someone s heart Paul uses circumcision as a picture of death. Under Jewish Law a small part of the body was cut away as a symbol of consecration to God; Jesus has taken away our whole sinful nature through His death and resurrection
ALIVE IN CHRIST The powerful symbolism of baptism (12) Having spoken of the symbolism of circumcision Paul now mentions baptism Notice that he takes it for granted that believers will have been baptised The symbolism of burial and resurrection, we identify with Jesus in His suffering and triumph This symbolism reflects the faith in Jesus that God has placed within us
ALIVE IN CHRIST The wonder of God s forgiveness (13 - 15) Without the forgiveness of our sins we were spiritually dead God has forgiven all of our sins and dealt with our sinful nature The accusations of our sins have been wiped away, they have been symbolically nailed to Jesus Cross of suffering Our sin is buried in the deepest part of the sea (Micah7:19)
ALIVE IN CHRIST The wonder of God s forgiveness (13 - 15) He has made us alive in Christ Jesus has triumphed over the power of sin Jesus has triumphed over all principalities and powers of wickedness He has made a public spectacle of them (he shamed them) a demonstration to all spiritual powers that He has triumphed
ALIVE IN CHRIST LESSONS FOR TODAY Remember at what cost your life was bought Remember that you were dead in your sins Remember you have a spiritual enemy Rejoice that you are forgiven Rejoice that you are now spiritually alive Rejoice that Jesus has triumphed over our spiritual enemies, we are on the victory side!
