ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT This following video and accompanying information is provided to assist you in preparing for an active attacker event on any of our campuses. There can be no exact predetermined course of action as each such attack is unique, however, there are steps we can take to enhance the probability for surviving such attacks. We ask that you watch the video and read accompanying information to better prepare you.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT TERMS: ESCAPE: Includes rapid evacuation or running from your present location. HIDE: utilizing existing surroundings to remain out of view. Also includes silencing cell phone and any other external noise. Utilizes cover and concealment. FIGHT: The act of physically attacking the assailant in self defense.

ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK CONTINUED. 1. If the location of the attacker is known, you should escape (run) from the known area of the attacker putting as much distance between you and the attacker as possible. Identify the path to escape. 2. Leave your belongings. Your safety is more important than any of your possessions. You will be able to retrieve them later. 3. Encourage others to escape as well but do not delay your escape by attempting to coax others who refuse to leave.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK CONTINUED. 4. If the location of the attacker is unknown, you should hide using COVER or CONCEALMENT. Secure all doors by locking them and using furniture or any other available items to barricade the doors. 5. Silence cell phones and any external noises; turn off all lights; remain quiet. If possible, lower all blinds to windows. However, only do so if it can be determined to be safely accomplished. 6. Prepare for a long stay and wait for the proper authorities to release you.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN ATTACK CONTINUED. 7. If faced with an imminent attack on yourself or your group that is unavoidable, it is time to FIGHT. This is the last resort. Everything else has failed. Come together as group to defend yourself and each other. Use items available as weapons. For example: desks, pen/pencils, umbrellas, purses, books, anything that can inflict injuries. Don t stop until the attacker is disabled.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHAT TO DO AFTER THE ATTACK IS TERMINATED. 1. If HIDING, stay in place until you are rescued by law enforcement. 2. Following all directions given to you by police to the letter. Remember they are still determining to scope of the attack and number of attackers. 3. SHOW YOUR HANDS Keep your hands visible to police and make no sudden uninstructed moves. 4. If you have a firearm exhibited, DO NOT MOVE! Follow police instructions. DO absolutely nothing unless instructed to do so.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT NOTIFICATION OF ACTIVE ATTACKER DRILL. We conduct drills every semester except for the summer. When a drill is conducted there will be an announcement that a DRILL is in progress and that is is ONLY A DRILL. When the drill is over you will be notified though a PA announcement that the drill has concluded.
ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT NOTIFICATION OF ACTIVE ATTACKER. The alarm will sound and the PA system will announce the presence of an active shooter. The announcement will clearly announce that THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Upon hearing this you should understand that this is a real threat and not a drill. Follow the previous recommendations just as you would for a drill.

ROANE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT There are similarities in active attacks, but each is an individual attack with its own characteristics. They are fluid and dynamic situations that evolve as they occur. The information contained here is a guide for how to handle the situation. Statistical data had revealed that preparation for such an event, through drills and simply stopping to look around you and think things through in your mind daily, exponentially increase the odds of survival. Statistically there is a strong likelihood that there will be casualties. Our goal is to reduce or eliminate those casualties and keep you safe.
