The work of the church Paul writes, Christ appointed some to be apostles, some to be prophets, others to be pastors and teachers. He did this to equip all God s people for the work of Christian service. Who does the work of the church? What is the pastor s role?
What else do church leaders do? Their belief in the truth must be strong, so they can teach it to others AND show those who disagree where they are wrong. (Titus 1:9, LB shortened) What must the leader be able to do?
Instructions for leaders Paul tells the leaders, Keep watch over yourselves, and over all the flock which the Holy Spirit has placed into your care. (Acts 20:28) Who does the flock represent? Who put us under a leader? What do you call the leader of a flock?
Paul continues Be shepherds of the church of God, which God made into his own people through the blood of His Son. The word pastor means shepherd. Who does the flock belong to? What does a pastor do for you that makes him similar to a shepherd?
Our attitude to leaders The Bible says, Obey your leaders and follow their orders. They watch over your souls without resting, since they must give an account of their service. Hebrews 13:17 Who must the leaders give an account to? What do they do for your souls? How should you feel toward them?
Putting it all together: God s plan is for every believer . To be part of a church To be cared for by a pastor
If the church is large, Some activities can be done in small groups Some people can be trained to help the pastor
Church is not Just something you DO once a week. It is what your ARE, 24/7
Church is not Just a building. It is PEOPLE who are ready to help each other, any time during the week.
Church is not Made up of perfect people. It is made of people like you. We admit we have failings, We forgive each other, We depend on God s grace.
Closing prayer Thank you for your plan, God. Someone is watching over my soul. I have other people who care about me. Help me to care for them, too.
