Our Mission and Commitment ICANN is not an ICT Developmental Agency, but We do have a mission to ensure an open, interoperable and stable global Internet And a role of coordinating and supporting unique identifiers (such as Names and IP Addresses) across the world Thus cannot say we are meeting mission or fulfilling role unless we have functioning and strong global DNS | 5

A Strategy for Development Leverage rich experience and abilities of Internet global Community Leverage unique multi-stakeholder approach to working; with over 160 governments in GAC Build upon ICANN s global presence with 3 Operational Hubs; 8 Engagement Offices and a global team in more than 30 countries Through growth of DNS in developing countries enhance buy-in and commitment to ICANN Enhance and grow involvement of developing countries in policy development process | 6

Progress So Far Regional Strategies starting in Africa bit now also in Middle East, Latin America and Asia Enhanced relationships with governments globally; including Missions in New York and Geneva Enhanced relationships with IGOS; including ITU at global and regional level, UNESCO and UNCTAD Development of IDNs | 7

Global Internet - Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) IDNs permit the global community to use a domain name in their native language or script ICANN has instituted the IDN Program to assist and promote the multilingual Internet using IDNs Program focused on planning and implementation of the IDN Top-level Domains (TLDs) that include ccTLDs and gTLDs IDN Program also supports and undertakes projects geared towards effective deployment of IDNs at the second-level, as guided by the community ICANN has become global to also support IDNs and operations | 8

Opportunities ahead With the recognition of role of ICTs in implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Work with UN Agencies and Missions, in NY and Geneva Engage at WSIS Forum and at CSTD Engage with I* and wider technical Community Closer to home; help ensure more global and diverse take up of TLds during next round | 9

The DNS Entrepreneurship Center (DNS-EC) Agreement signed between ICANN and Egypt s NTRA at ICANN 50 meeting in 2014 DNS-EC to serve as a repository for DNS knowledge and expertise ICANN through partnerships with regional and international experts provides training and mentoring programs NTRA incubates DNS-EC during the start-up phase and provides staff / logistical support | 13

  19. Key Roles of this Office 1. This will be the Main Engagement Centre for Africa Possibility of other satellite Offices / Centers in other regions in Africa (North Africa, Southern Africa or Western Africa) The Office will sever the whole of Africa 2. This Office will serve as ICANN s foot hold and provide our physical presence in Africa 3. Support the 3 ICANN Africa staff especially as an Institutional Engagement focal point with AF*, Governments and I* organizations in the continent 4. Further, the activities of the Main Engagement Centre will be defined and managed by GSE Africa. | 20

Significant Gains Realized in Capacity Building in Africa Awareness Overall Improved Visibility for ICANN in the region 1 Concept of the DNS forum and DNS Awards ( 4th edition at ICANN 55) 2 Multiple communication channels with Community (Lists, webinars ) 3 Topical Workshops ( Focusing on emerging issues like IP & Trademarks) 4 Additional L-Root copies deployed (Tanzania, Mauritius, Seychelles ) 5 Over 12 DNSSEC Roadshows (.TZ, .KE, .ZM, .MA, .BW signed as a result) 6 Special IANA Awareness Campaigns in April June 2015 7 Over 8 additions to GAC reps (Namibia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, The Gambia ) 8 DNS Business Exchange Program (Interns to IP Mirror, AFILIAS and .TN) 9 DNS Entrepreneurship: Over 300 Registrars / Registries from 6 Countries trained so far on DNS Marketing 1 0 | 21
