  3. Introduction James Madison University s Office of Disability Services Accessible Media team All are taking/have taken Virginia Tech s prep course for CPACC certification. 3

  4. What is CPACC? Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies A certification given by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) Covers cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about 1. Disabilities 2. Accessibility & Universal Design 3. Accessibility-related standards, laws, and management strategies Certification is granted upon passing of CPACC exam. 4

  5. Virginia Techs CPACC Prep Course A 10-week online course to prepare for the CPACC certification exam. Cohorts meet weekly to develop skillsets, review prep course material, and enhance accessibility within their respective areas. Includes VT employees and colleagues from across VA. Participants are not required to take the certification exam. Upon successful completion of the course, participants may obtain micro-badge acknowledging efforts and cohort completion. NOT a disability critical theory course. 5

  6. Bryant Currently taking the VT CPACC prep course. Never had a formal training in accessibility or disability. CPACC has deepened and broadened my existing knowledge. Applicable to both my professional and academic interests. 6

  7. Christina - VT class Tips for convincing your bosses to let you take the VT class Free! Opportunity to network Introduction to wide variety of accessibility topics and resources Your initiative in asking may make a big difference! How did we make time? Permission and support from boss Held time on calendar Class did not overlap with busiest times of year Pressure of knowing we'd be taking the test Variety of formats can be used in different settings 7

  8. Christina Universal Design for Learning Multiple means of Engagement: Everyone comes to class with own professional experience & shares it Much of class is self-guided Online sessions, can leave video on or off, etc. Multiple means of Representation: Lots of accessible formats & personal choice of what to use Clear organization Multiple means of Action & Expression: Options for student response, such as weekly short quizzes Reflection and discussion with peers (Ironically, the test itself is not very universally designed, imho!) 8

  9. Brennan - Keyword: Industry Standard This is somewhat rare in our world. It should be appealing to supervisors and supervisees alike. Metrics can be hard in the disability services world. Having a professional cert to back up the story you report out and lend it more credibility. Allows for greater collaboration and clearer communication among collogues and peers our field. 9

  10. Brennan Potential Impacts of An Emerging Standard We can look towards other industries with standardized professional certifications to see where this could potentially go: It could develop a baseline level of understanding. It could influence hiring both as an interviewer and as an applicant. Another appealing factor Certification requires ongoing PD/education to maintain certification. 10
