Routing Realities and Zero Reroute Vision
Explore the challenges in routing affecting web performance, as discussed by Olav Kvittem of UNINETT. The Dragonlab participants analyze packet loss events and share insights on operational optimization. Dive into the world of network engineering and measurements to tackle sluggish routing issues effectively.

The web is sluggish because routing sucks ;-) Olav Kvittem UNINETT 28.05.17 Picture from wikipedia.org
The Dragonlab particpants Participants U.Auckland, RNP(Brasil), Cernet(out but co-initiator) Nordunet, Sunet, Uninett, NTE(commercial) Switch, Cesnet, RedIris Prospective : Heanet, Aarnet NTNU university : PHD s and MSC s Measurement setup 100 packets per second with timestamps Traceroute analyze packet loss events
The realities Last week outages longer than .5 seconds 4 hours time lost in 1000 end to end outages Might be the same actual outage hitting many Site power loss 12 minutes Router upgrade 2 minutes Fiber instability (10*1 min) .. Oddities Old packets sent on when link comes up hours afterwards Tails of routing loops
Zero reroute time vison ? Operations Minimize effects Operationalize stats Engineering BGP tuning Lower timers Faster reroutes Measure and learn Measure across BGP boundaries Inform NOC s about observations
Summing up Routing sucks a bit - doesn t it ?-) Join the measurements with a linux(VM) ? Web site : http://in.uninett.no/dragonlab/ Software is open - research quality don t ask if you can t handle it ! Thanks !
