Objectives Be familiar with the HISD visitor policy and understand visitor management. Be aware of actions to take to ensure building safety. Know the meaning of each drill, how often to conduct, and how to practice for each. Know how to avoid common fire code violations. 3
Visitor Policy All visitors must report to designated area when visiting a school Visitors must present valid photo identification Visitors must sign in on visitor log (HISD and non-HISD) A pass must be visible at all times while on campus, and should include: Name Date Area to visit Visitors must return to designated area to sign out before leaving * HISD Board Policy GKC(Regulation) 4
Visitor Management When using buzz-in system, always ask and verify reason for visit Visitor should be accompanied when possible If visitor badge is not visible, staff should accompany or redirect individual to main office Ensure visitor badge is collected upon departure Every visitor must sign out before leaving 5
Building Security Classroom doors to be locked during instructional time Exterior doors should not be propped open Exterior doors should be always locked Report any door needing repair immediately 6
Secure Definition: A response action taken to secure the perimeter of buildings from a threat outside of the building. Everyone should move indoors and lock all outside doors. No one in, no one out. 8
Lockdown Definition: A response action taken to secure interior portions of buildings and grounds during incidents that pose an immediate threat of violence inside the building. Lock or secure doors, turn off lights, move out of sight, and remain silent. 9
Evacuate Definition: A response action taken to quickly move from one place to another, away from the threat. Everyone should move immediately to a designated assembly area. 10
Shelter in Place Weather Definition: A response action taken to move quickly indoors because it is safer inside the building than outside. May require moving to rooms without windows or to higher ground. 11
Shelter for Hazmat Definition: A response action taken to move quickly indoors because it is safer inside the building than outside. May require evacuating to an assembly area or a sealed room. 12
Fire Evacuation Definition: A response action taken to evacuate the building due to a fire. Everyone must exit safely and as quickly as possible. Know the evacuation routes. 13
Common Fire Code Violations Ceiling Clearance 18 for sprinkled ceilings, 24 for non-sprinkled Wall Covering Maximum of 20% of wall is allowed to be covered with paper Door Covering Should not be covered with paper Small Appliances Should only be in designated areas, such as breakrooms 14
Common Fire Code Violations Extension Cords 2 or more cords connected together Improper use Obstructions Blocking entrances/exits with furniture, boxes, etc. Chains/Deadbolt Locks Chains on doors Use of deadbolt locks Curtains Must be fire resistant and have the proper certificate 15
