What Stays the Same What Stays the Same Masters level award process (including deadlines, eligibility, and application method) are all the same as last year The Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement has not changed Some agency-specific, special funding elements continue: see individual agency pages for details
Whats New What s New The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (results released April 2025) and the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (results February 2025), are now phased-out New names: all awards are now called Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Number and amount of graduate scholarships have increased 300 additional awards at the master s level ($27,000/year for up to one year) 1,200 additional awards at the doctoral level ($40,000/year for up to three years) 220 additional awards at the postdoctoral level ($70,000/year for two years) Doctoral level awards have significant changes
Some Specific Changes: Doctoral Level Some Specific Changes: Doctoral Level Open to international students that are currently enrolled in a doctoral program of study at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application. Up to 15% of all doctoral awards will be awarded to international applicants, and they may only hold the award in Canada. Up to 20% of all doctoral awards would be eligible to be held abroad. Institutions will continue to be able to submit additional applications from Indigenous students above their quota.
Some Specific Changes: Doctoral Level Some Specific Changes: Doctoral Level Eligibility window has increased from 24 to 36 months of full-time equivalent study completed in program. For SSHRC and NSERC, there are no longer two tiers of doctoral funding Selection Criteria now mirror the former Vanier criteria: Relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia (50%) Research Potential (50%)
CGRS Masters Fellowship 2025 CGRS Masters Fellowship 2025 Dates and Deadlines Dates and Deadlines Fall, 2025: SGS information session for Masters applicants December 1, 2025 (before 8:00 pm ET): Complete applications must be submitted by the deadline using the Research Portal. April 1, 2026: Offers of awards will be available in the Research Portal as of April 1. Alternate offers may be made up until January 31 of the next calendar year.
CGRS Doctoral Fellowship 2025 CGRS Doctoral Fellowship 2025 Dates and Deadlines Dates and Deadlines July 29, 2025: Information Session for Applicants September 18, 2025: Deadline for submission of complete CGS-D application packages. November 21, 2025: SGS submits selected applications to the appropriate Tri-Council.
