  2. Bridge Basics Bridge Basics 1. How would you define a bridge? 2. What are the different types of bridges? 3. What forces act on a bridge? 4. What design elements are included in a bridge to make it strong? Khan Academy Videos Click images to watch https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/cub_brid_lesson01_activity2

  3. The Challenge The Challenge Design Objectives: Make a bridge that spans the river (20 cm gap between tables) and supports the most weight (pennies). Design Constraints: No part of the bridge may touch the "water" (or floor) The bridge cannot be taped to the wooden support structure. Materials are limited no replacements or exchanges allowed Your team will have 20 minutes to build the bridge. Materials: 20 plastic straws 100 cm of masking tape Scissors Questions? Questions? https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/cub_brid_lesson01_activity2

  4. Build Time Build Time Your team will have 20 minutes to create a bridge using the materials provided. Time to Test! Time to Test! We will test the bridges using pennies. The total pennies your bridge held will be put in a cup to be measured. The highest mass will determine the winner.

  5. Things to Consider Things to Consider How would you rate your bridge from 1 = poor to 5 = great? Explain why. What other materials would have been helpful? What suggestions do you have for improvements to your bridge? https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/cub_brid_lesson01_activity2
