The scientific method is a structured approach for experimentation used to explore observations and answer inquiries. Scientists aim to identify cause-and-effect relationships in nature through controlled experiments. Learn how to craft a hypothesis as a starting point for investigation. Explore identifying variables and experimental design elements.

  3. Overview of the Scientific Method The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a predictable way. Just as it does for a professional scientist, the scientific method will help you to understand makes a scientific experiment inquiry valid. 3

  6. hypothesis Noun a proposed scientific explanation made on the basis of evidence and reasoning, that serves as a starting point for further investigation or experimentation. synonyms: theory, theorem, thesis, supposition, postulation, postulate, proposition, premise, assumption 6
