Outline of CSO research funding schemes Catalytic research grants no set deadlines / quick turnaround / up to 35,000 per award Response mode research grants 2 funding committees each meet 2x per year up to 300,000 per award Capacity building clinical research fellowships Charity co-funding initiatives research projects, fellowships, Ph.D. s
Catalytic Grant Scheme Launched February 2016 Up to 35,000 (for direct costs only) available for short projects to provide key supporting evidence to underpin already well formulated plans for subsequent applications to other research funders i.e. to address a specific key area of uncertainty, potentially de-risking the application to the other funder. Best understood as a mechanism for leveraging additional funding into the Scottish health research funding pot. 80 applications received 33 applications funded (success rate approx. 40%) Average response time 17 calendar days Average award 23k
Catalytic Grant Scheme Successful applications 2016
Response Mode Committees Translational Clinical Studies Research Committee Research aimed at improving treatments and / or diagnostic approaches for conditions of clinical importance to the population of Scotland Applications must demonstrate the clinical relevance of the research and its potential for translation into clinical practice Applications that seek to address questions of clinical importance in small patient groups e.g. rare diseases are welcomed Health Improvement, Protection and Services Research Committee Research aimed at improving or protecting population health or improving the quality, safety and / or effectiveness of healthcare in Scotland Applications must demonstrate the relevance and importance of the research and its potential for significant impact on health in Scotland. A clear pathway for translation of the results into policy and / or practice must be presented For both committees, development, feasibility or pilot studies that will provide essential data to underpin applications for definitive studies to other funders are expected to form a major proportion of the portfolio
Response Mode Committees First stage submit 4 page outline proposal through local University research office or NHS R&D office call deadlines published 1 year in advance by CSO. Outlines reviewed at triage meeting by a panel of members from the relevant committee Applicants successful at triage invited to submit full proposal around 6 weeks allocated. Full proposals sent to external reviewers and 3 committee members. Applicants asked to respond to reviewers comments in 2-page rebuttal letter around 10 days allocated.
