Scripture Reading Matthew 8:18-34
I was too deeply embedded in the world to change course. Lord Kenneth Clark
In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 THE KING HAS AUTHORITY OVER ALL CREATION Matthew 8:18-34
I. JESUS CALLS DISCIPLES WHO FOLLOW HIM DESPITE THE COSTS (VERSES 18-23) 18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side.
I. JESUS CALLS DISCIPLES WHO FOLLOW HIM DESPITE THE COSTS (VERSES 18-23) 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go. 20 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
I. JESUS CALLS DISCIPLES WHO FOLLOW HIM DESPITE THE COSTS (VERSES 18-23) 21 Another of the disciples said to him, Lord, let me first go and bury my father. 22 And Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead. 22 Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead. New Living Translation Excuses are the cradle ... that Satan rocks men off to sleep in. D.L. Moody

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. Matthew 10:34-35

II. JESUS HAS AUTHORITY OVER THE FORCES OF NATURE (VERSES 24-27) 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, Save us, Lord; we are perishing. 26 And he said to them, Why are you afraid, O you of little faith? Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 And the men marveled, saying, What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?
III. JESUS HAS AUTHORITY OVER THE FORCES OF SATAN (VERSES 28-32) 28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time? And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day a punishment of eternal fire. Jude 6-7
III. JESUS HAS AUTHORITY OVER THE FORCES OF SATAN (VERSES 28-32) 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs. 32 And he said to them, Go. So, they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. If you think that Romans 8:28 All things work together for good to them who love God, to them who are the called according to his purposes is a promise that you'll have a middle-class life in a lovely little church in a nice little town where you may even get a pass to the country club, you're wrong. Paul did not promise that. Haddon Robinson
IV. TRUST IN JESUS AUTHORITY OVER ALL CREATION (VERSES 33-34) 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
IV. TRUST IN JESUS AUTHORITY OVER ALL CREATION (VERSES 33-34) Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So, he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:35-39
