CAREERS PORTAL/REACH PLUS Reach plus has a number of self assessment tests to determine students career interest, multiple intelligences, personality traits, etc.

LEAVING CERTIFICATE SUBJECTS Presentation students complete 7 subjects in total: English Irish * (Unless Exempt) - H4 needed for Primary Teaching Mathematics Third Language (Spanish/French) PLUS 3 other choice subjects
LEAVING CERTIFICATE SUBJECTS The 6 subjects with the highest points are used for CAO Course Entry Points are calculated from one sitting of the Leaving Cert All students presenting H6 or above in Higher Level mathematics will have 25 points added to their score for Mathematics. The bonus points will only be relevant where mathematics is scored as one of a student s 6 best subjects for points purposes.

BUSINESS STUDIES Business helpful for Commerce, Business/IT, Finance, Business and Law Economics - As above Accounting - helpful for Accounting, Finance, Business/IT, Commerce. Exception: H4 in LC Accounting required for B.Comm Accountancy at NUIG
SCIENCES Physics Chemistry Biology Agricultural Science Accepted as General Entry Requirement in Science area, but does not meet Specific Requirements for some courses eg. Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy - UCC.
SCIENCE Entry Requirements: 1 Science Subject Needed for All General Science Degrees Radiography Optometry Occupational Therapy Veterinary Speech & Language Therapy Public Health Science Engineering Food Science + Food Business Nursing Home Economics Teaching
Specific Science Requirements: Chemistry is required for: Public Health Nutrition (DT225) and Biomedical Science (DT204) DIT Dentistry (CK702), Pharmacy (CK703) and Medicine (CK701) in UCC (plus either Physics or Biology) Veterinary Medicine (DN300) UCD Pharmacy (TR072)TCD Biology is required for: Home Economics with Biology (AS001) St Angela's College If taking Biology as part of Arts (MH101) NUI Maynooth Useful for P.E. teaching with Biology (DC205) in DCU Physics is required for: Theoretical Physics (TR035) in TCD
HUMANITIES History - helpful for Law, Arts and courses which requires substantial reading Geography - Accepted as science subject (H5) for Pharmacy, Science at TCD but generally not accepted where a lab science subject is required Art - Portfolio essential NCAD pass in Art or 3rdlanguage for entry Fine Art and Design Communications MTU Portfolio but no requirement to have Leaving Cert Art Music - Maynooth- H5 Music Entrance Performance test required for music courses
SOCIAL/ PRACTICAL Home Economics - helpful for Food Science, Nutritional Science, Dietetics, Home Ec. Teaching Physical Education (LCPE) - helpful for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sports science, PE teaching
ALTERNATIVE OFFERINGS LCVP- Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (taken as one of the chosen 3 subjects) LCA - Leaving Certificate Applied
LCVP - 2 Link Modules & Assessment Module 1: Preparation for the world of work - 3 portfolios Research and investigation of local employment opportunities, job seeking skills (letter writing, CV presentation, interview techniques), work experience, work shadowing a person in a career area that interests them. Module 2: Enterprise Education - 3 portfolios Visits to local business and community enterprises; meeting & interviewing enterprising people on site and in the classroom & activities that will build self confidence, creativity, initiative and develop teamwork, communication and computer skills. 6 portfolios completed before March of 6th Year = 60% of LCVP grade Written Exam in May of 6th Year = 40% LCVP grade
LCVP LC with strong vocational/enterprise dimension Develops information technology, presentation & organisational skills Students must take 6 subjects (Eng, Irish, Maths & Language & 2 option subjects) + LCVP = 7 LC subjects
LCVP Grading For LC LCVP is recognised for points purposes by the Technological Universities and the Universities Distinction (80-100%) 66 Points (H4) Merit (65-79%) 46 Points (H6) Pass (50-64%) 28 Points (O4) Unsuccessful (0-49%) 0 Points Over 15,600 students take LCVP each year with over 80% using LCVP as one of their best 6 subjects for points

Updates on careers information for TYs, 5thand 6thyears and parents/ guardians! REGULAR UPDATES ON ALL IMPORTANT EVENTS/DEADLINES FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
DEADLINE Monday 6th March 2023 at 4pm Students must indicate their choice of subjects in order of preference (number 1 15) Students must indicate if interested in studying additional or alternative courses such as Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) or LCVP.
Recording your preferences Every 3rd Year & TY student will complete a senior cycle option form - made available through hard copy tomorrow. This form must be signed by both the parent and the student. If a student is going into the established Leaving Certificate, they will complete their subject preferences on that form also. Rank your preferences 1-15 on the subjects you would like to study, 1 being the subject you would most like to study, 15 being the subject you would least like to study. Please return the senior cycle option form to the main office before the deadline date of 4pm on Mon 6th March.
