Serum creatinine and creatinine clearance tests are essential in assessing kidney function by measuring waste product levels in blood and urine. Learn about creatinine, its relation to muscle mass, kidney function, reference values, and conditions affecting levels. Discover medications that can impact blood creatinine levels.

Presentation Transcript

  1. Serum Creatinine Presented By Assist.Lecturer Sarah Sameer Sami M.Sc. In Biochemistry/ Clinical laboratory sciences

  2. What is creatinine and creatinine clearance test? This test measures the level of the waste product creatinine in blood and urine This test provides more sensitive measure of renal damage than blood urea? What is creatinine? It is a non protein end product of creatine metabolism Its amount in serum is proportional to muscle mass

  3. It is easily excreted by kidneys with minimum or no tubular reabsorption It is directly related to GFR Its level remains normally constant Blood creatinine level: It shows how well the kidneys are working It is higher in men than in women

  4. Creatinine clearance test: It measures how well creatinine is removed from the body by kidneys It gives better information than blood creatinine test on how well the kidneys are working It is done on both a blood or urine sample

  5. Reference values: Serum Men: 0.7-1.2 mg/dl Women: 0.5-0.9 mg/dl Clearance test Men: 97-137 ml/min Women: 88-128 ml/min

  6. Pathological: Increase: Increased rate of formation:

  7. Diminished renal excretion of creatinine:

  8. Decrease: Muscle disease such as muscle dystrophy

  9. What are medicines that increase blood creatinine? Anti hypertensives: ACE inhibitors ex: captopril NSAIDs: ibuprofen, naproxen Diuretics: furosemide Antibiotics: aminoglycosides (gentamicin) and cephalosporins (cefoxitin)
