WEEK 20 DAY 3 SQUANDER, CLASH, DEFENSELESS
Unlike Native Americans, the settlers were not respectful of the land. They cut down many trees and hunted too many animals. Excerpt from Survival and Loss: Native American Boarding Schools
When the settlers cut down so many trees and overhunted, they squandered, or carelessly wasted, resources important to Native Americans. Squander: Carelessly waste something such as money, time, or opportunities
Tulip wants to be an artist, so she takes an art class. When her instructor tells her what she might do to be a better painter, she ignores the advice. Is Tulip squandering her chance to be a better artist? Why? Use the word squander in your response.

In 1879, Richard Henry Pratt built a boarding school for Native Americans to Americanize them. You cannot read or write, Pratt responded. Because you were not educated, these mountains, valleys, and streams have passed from you. Pratt argued that if Native Americans could speak the English language, they would not be defenseless. Captain Pratt persuaded Spotted Tail to send his children to the boarding school by telling him that his people were defenseless because they could not read or write. The word DEFENSELESS means helpless or unprotected. Learning English would help them against the unfair treatment by European Americans.
