H. H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi A documentary presentation
Birth and Childhood Shri Mataji was born on 21st March, 1923 (Day of Equinox) at 12 noon in Chindwara (Madhya Pradesh) in a Christian family. Shri Mataji spent her childhood years in the family house in Nagpur. Shri Mataji, known as Nirmala, was a very happy child and was loved by everyone. Most of the time, she was bursting with energy and inspired her playmates of all different ages through drama, songs and dance. Sometimes people used to find her alone in a remote corner of the house, with her face beaming with inward joy, lost in meditation. She loved everything that was genuine and natural. She would even go to school barefoot in order to feel Mother Earth.

Shri Matajis Parents Her father, Shri P. K. Salve was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India and helped in writing free India's first constitution. He was a renowned scholar. He was master of 14 languages & had translated the Koran in Marathi. Her mother was a very good student and a mathematician. After her academic success her priority was her family and she did that with great care & love.
Participation in Freedom Struggle Shri Mataji took an active part in Indian freedom struggle and was one of the prominent youth leaders.
Shri Matajis Youth The young Nirmala spent her vacations at the ashram of Mahatma Gandhi. She participated in all the activities of the ashram and was even asked to choose the songs for prayer. Most of Gandhiji's themes like balanced production, social morality and responsibility, and the integration of all the world's religions were a pre-configuration and expression of "Sahaja Culture". In the absence of her parents, Shri Mataji bore the main domestic responsibility of raising the family.
Education When it was time for higher education, Nirmala chose to study the field of medicine focusing on the scientific terminology of the anatomy, and human physiology. She wanted to know how far human knowledge had gone. However, her heart was in the country's freedom struggle. In 1942, she spearheaded the student struggle for freedom and often frequented the jails. On one occasion, the British even put her on ice to torture her and dampen her indomitable spirit.
Marriage In 1947, she got married to Sir C.P. Srivastava (knighted by the Queen of England). Sir C.P.Srivastava was a distinguished civil servant and served late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri as Joint secretary in the years 1964- 65. He was elected for 16 consecutive years as the Secretary General of the United Nations International Maritime Organization.
Family After her marriage, Shri Mataji devoted herself to her family. She has two lovely daughters, Kalpana and Sadhana & grand children . When both the daughters were married, Shri Mataji's concern for the well being of the society manifested in her launching 'Youth Society' for films to promote healthy entertainment and protect the innocence of Indian films.

Genesis of Sahaja Yoga In 1970, she meditated for two days continuously on the lonely beach in Nargol and opened the Sahasrara on May 5th 1970. She also devised a technique to give en-masse self realization and called it Sahaja Yoga . Since 1970, she has been tirelessly working day and night for emancipation of people and world peace. Now, Sahaja Yoga is practiced in over 100 countries. She has also started an International Sahaja Public School in Dharmshala, an NGO Vishwa Nirmal Prem Ashram to support destitute women and children in Noida and an International Sahaja Yoga Research and Health Center in Washi, Mumbai.
Opening of Sahasrara In the early morning of May 5th 1970, on a lonely beach of Nargol, Shri Mataji opened the Sahasrara for Humanity out of sheer compassion. In Her words: I saw the Kundalini, which is the primordial force within us, which is the Holy Ghost within us, rising, like a telescope opening out. And then I saw the whole thing open and a big torrential rain of beams started flowing through my head all over. I felt I am lost. I am no more. There is only grace. I saw it completely happening to me.
This was the commencement of Sahaja Yoga. The last stage in evolution of Mankind had begun. The transition to "Satya Yuga", or to the "Golden Age" promised in every religion had started to evolve. After studying chakras of countless people, and their permutations and combinations, Shri Mataji discovered a way to give en-masse Self- Realization. For her to raise their Kundalini, people had to ask for it genuinely in their heart and had to forgive everyone in general and not feel guilty. Initially friends would organize small meetings in their home where she would give realization.
En-masse Realization "Saha" means 'with', "Ja" means 'born', "Yoga" means union with the all pervading power of Divine love. Kundalini is the divine energy residing within us. This Kundalini has to ascend and pierce through six energy centers (Chakras), which are placed in the spinal cord and in the brain. The last breakthrough is the actualization of the the experience, as one feels the cool breeze of the Holy Ghost (the Ruah; the Ruh; the Adi Shakti; the Athena) emitting out of one's fontanel bone area. Shri Mataji had founded the En-masse Self Realization through which people in mass could experience the awakening of the Kundalini .
