Galatians 5:19-21, NKJV 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God

Introduction We have been studying sins that are termed the works of the flesh and have grouped these in the following categories: Sins of moral impurity - (adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness) Idolatry and sorcery Violations of the law of love - (Hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissentions, heresies, envy) In this study, we will discuss drunkenness and revelries which we will categorize as sins of intemperance

  6. Sins of Intemperance METHE(drunkenness) KOMOS (revelries, revellings, carousing)

  7. METHE (drunkenness) This word describes the state of intoxication due to drinking alcohol The Bible is exceedingly strong and pointed in Condemning drunkenness 1 Corinthians 5:11; 6:9-10 Warningof the dangers of drunkenness Proverbs 20:1; 23:29-35

  8. Drinking and Not Getting Drunk? What about drinking that does not lead to drunkenness? A preacher replied to me saying a Christian can drink alcohol as long as they did not get drunk How much can one drink before they get drunk? If beer, how many cans? If wine, how many glasses? If hard liquor, how many glasses? Can one know exactly how much that is?

The level of alcohol in modern day alcoholic beverages makes it difficult to distinguish between the drinking and drunkenness Levels of alcohol are much higher today due to advanced distilling techniques Some of the strongest drinks in the past were not much stronger than our mild beers today, thus making it much easier to get drunk today In ancient Greece there was very little drunkenness, for the normal practice was to dilute two parts of wine to three parts of water

A Christian is bound by example and the principles of a Godly influence - Romans 14:13-21 Can a Christian engage in activity (social drinking) that contributes to The number one problem in our country? (About 1 in 9 are alcoholics) The senseless killing of about 25,000 innocent victims yearly (half of driving related accidents involve driving under the influence of alcohol) About 25% of divorces (that which God hates - Mal. 2:16)

  11. Drinking and Not Getting Drunk? A Christian is bound by example and the principles of a Godly influence - Romans 14:13-21 A Christian s responsibility regarding a good influence is clear - 1 Corinthians 10:31-33 Matthew 5:14-16 Only the insensitive and selfish members of the Lord s body would try to justify engaging in social drinking today - Romans 14:14-15 The mature Christian considers whether the practice glorifies God, and benefits his fellow man 1 Corinthians 6:20; Philippians 2:3-5

KOMOS (revelries, revellings, carousing) This word refers to feasts and drinking parties that were extended until late at night and indulged in revelry Such behavior is condemned not only in Galatians, but also in Romans 13:12-14 Some modern-day forms of this sin would include what goes on at... Mardi Gras in New Orleans Many New Year s parties Some office Christmas parties Some music concerts

KOMOS (revelries, revellings, carousing) One does not have to be a scholar to see and understand why such behavior is condemned and is not becoming of a Christian How many friendships, marriages, etc., have been destroyed by unrestrained behavior that goes on at such functions? Even the so called innocent can often get caught up in the excitement and do something that ruins the rest of their life! Peter warned in 1 Peter 4:3-4 Such behavior is unbecoming of Christians The worlds sees Christians a strange for not being involved in such behavior - but so be it!

  14. and such like ASV, KJV Such a concluding statement implies the following His list is not to be taken as all inclusive and the sins listed are to give us a basic idea of the kind of things we are to avoid We must apply discernment on many activities which may not be specifically condemned in the Scriptures

  15. and such like ASV, KJV Many want a Thou shall not... for anything to be determined to be wrong But the Bible does not list everything that is wrong Instead, we are given basic principles of conduct, with some specific examples to illustrate such principles We are expected to exercise discernment concerning good and evil using the principles found in the Scriptures - Hebrews 5:12-14

  16. DETERMINING THE LIKE SINS We are often faced with issues that may not be specifically mentioned in the Bible For example, questions related to dancing, drugs, movies, music, smoking, television programs How do I know when something not specifically addressed is right or wrong?

  17. DETERMINING THE LIKE SINS One helpful way is to compare the activity in question to the two lists found in Gal. 5:19-23 Is the activity like the works of the flesh ? Or is it like the fruit of the Spirit ? The better we understand these works of the flesh as well as what constitutes the fruit of the Spirit, the better we are equipped to make sound decisions conducive to Godly living

  18. CONCLUSION The purpose of these lessons on the works of the flesh is so we can know and avoid them Remember the words of the apostle Paul who repeatedlywarned that they who practice (do) such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God

  19. CONCLUSION Whether it be one of those things specifically listed, or something such like them, the consequences will be devastating! Whether we do or practice these sins, the consequences are equally devastating By the provisions of God s grace, all sinners can be forgiven of their sins through obedience to the gospel of Christ Consider Paul s words to the Saints in Corinth

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God - 1 Cor. 6:9-11 ASV
