  1. Sligo Grammar School Frequently Asked Questions and Points of Information

  2. What will the first day be like? We are looking forward to reopening our doors and welcoming all our students We are having a staggered return to school (as per Headmaster s email and school calendar). Different year groups will be returning on different days. On the day of return, the year group concerned will be brought together (with social distancing). The arrangements for the safe return to school will be explained including one- way systems, hand hygiene, wearing of masks etc. Students will be reassured and the support networks available will be outlined.

  3. Accessing school In the morning students will enter the school via the Sports Hall door or the Main Entrance and follow the clearly marked one-way system. School doors will not be opened until 8.15am. Please do not arrive before that time. First class begins at 8.45am Students must go directly to their first class and not congregate in the corridors. We will have two temperature screening machines installed by the start of term. As a child passes the machine their temperature is read. Students with a high temperature will be identified and a picture will be sent to the office and Matron will follow the relevant protocols to deal sensitively with the students concerned.

  4. Exiting school Forms 1, 2 and 4 will leave class 5 minutes early and follow the one-way system to exit the school via the Sports Hall door or the Main Door Boarders are requested to go directly to the boarding house Forms 3, 5 and 6 will leave at the end of class in the same fashion. The school day will now finish a little earlier due to the shorter lunchtime. On Mondays & Wednesdays at 3.25pm, on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays at 2.45pm

  5. Classrooms There will be Base Classrooms for Forms 1, 2, 3 and 4 in order to reduce movement around the school. There will be some limited movement in option subjects for Forms 1, 2, 3 and 4. Forms 5 and 6 will be rotating throughout the day. Rotation will be restricted to certain areas of the school. All classrooms will need good ventilation, therefore windows will be open

  6. Will students have lockers? There will be no student lockers Students should leave all books etc at home. They will be needed for homework and study purposes. Teachers will be able to display the text book on the projector. Students should have a pencil case (wipe cleanable) and their usual supply of pens and pencils. There should be no sharing of any materials. A refill pad can be used to take notes during the day. As part of your homework these can be arranged into relevant subject folders in the evening. Many teachers will share their notes online through Microsoft Teams. Boarder pupils will have lockers in the boarding houses.

  7. Will students wear uniform? All students will wear uniform as usual. Uniforms should be clean and in good condition at all times. It is really important that all uniform, but especially, jumpers and jackets and ties are clearly labelled with the students name. Items of uniform left behind after school is over, will have to be removed as part of the cleaning process.

  8. Will I have to wear a mask all day? In line with public health guidelines, where a distance of 2m cannot be maintained, students will be required to wear face masks, for the protection of the whole school community. Students not able to wear face masks for medical reasons must provide a medical cert to the school. When students are outside at breaks and are more than 2m apart, they will not have to wear masks. Students must provide their own face masks. Boarders should bring enough for the week Visors maybe worn in certain circumstances

  9. What about break and lunch times? There will be NO access to town for lunch for any students. Day students are to bring their lunch with them. Day pupils will eat snacks and lunch in classrooms while boarder pupils will attend the school dining hall as usual. The dining hall will not be available to day pupils. There will be no sandwich bar facilities and no water fountain facilities. Day pupils must bring their own food and drinks to school. All lunch boxes, water bottles etc must be returned to the school bag and brought home every day. During break and lunch we will encourage students to go outside for exercise/fresh air. During bad weather we can utilise the Sports Hall in line with current public health guidelines. Breaks will be staggered. Juniors break from 10.25 to 10.45 & TY & Seniors from 10.45 to 11.05. Lunchtimes: Juniors 12.40 to 13.05 & TY & Seniors 13.00 to 13.25

  10. Access to the water fountains in the school Access to the water fountains in the school will be prohibited in the best interests of Health & Safety Students are required to bring their own drinks to school each day

  11. What if I forget to bring something to school? Try to do without it if you can. If it is important (eg food or medication) tell your Form Teacher, Co- Ordinator or another member of staff. There will be a table at the front door for parents to drop off items that cannot be done without Parents are kindly requested to place items in a bag and label with the child s name and class. The item can be collected there by the pupil.

  12. Transition Year We are very excited about this years transition year programme . The programme will be catered to maximise the learning experience for all students in line with national guidelines.   13. Will there be extra-curricular activities? An extra-curricular timetable will be available, on the school website, from September 1st. All extra-curricular sporting activities will follow the guidelines laid down by their respective representative bodies. Extra-curricular activities held in school will be subject to public health guidelines. Numbers may be restricted in some activities and therefore we will offer activities on a rotational basis so everyone has an opportunity to take part.

  14. Do I need to buy a laptop/tablet? There is no requirement on anybody to purchase a device at present. If you do have a device you do not need to bring it to school on the first day. Further information will be available about devices in the near future and we will update you then

  15. What if I feel unwell? If your child feels unwell before school please keep them at home and seek medical advice. During the school day, we are lucky to have a Matron on site 24/7. If someone feels unwell they should tell a member of staff and go to Matron s Office. Matron s office is now located between Rooms 21 and 22. We also have 2 isolation rooms in the school.

  16. What if I have an appointment and need to leave school during the day? Students who are 16 years and younger may only leave school with the prior written permission of their parents and must be collected and returned to school by their parents. Notification to leave school is given to the relevant Co-Ordinator by email only (no paper notes).   17. What if I am late for school? What if I am absent for one or more days? If you are late for school and arrive during first class, come to school as usual and join your class. Your teacher will mark you as late . If you arrive later than the end of first class an email must be sent to your Co-ordinator so that your attendance can be accurately recorded. If you are absent for one or more days your parents must send an email to the relevant Co-ordinator, explaining your reason for absence.

  18. When are the Parent Teacher Meetings? A copy of the school calendar is available on the school website www.sligogrammarschool.org. All the significant events (including Parent Teacher Meetings and holidays) are noted on the calendar. Keep a regular check on the calendar as it is subject to change.

  19. How do I access my Microsoft 365 account? Please refer to the instructional video on the website. If you have any problems with office 365 during the school day between 9.30 and 2.30, contact Gerry Price at 0860689722 If your problem is outside of school hours contact Gerry at, gerry.price@sligogrammarschool.org .   20. My child has an Educational Psychological Report. How do I share this with the school? If you have a written report from an Educational Psychologist it is important that you send this to school immediately Please place in a sealed envelope and mark it for the attention of Mr O Neill (our SEN Co-Ordinator). Ideally we would prefer an electronic version of the report. Please send to karol.oneill@sligogrammarschool.org

  21. How does my child access their timetable? Parent s log into their child s profile on vsware. Underneath the profile picture they will see a tab for timetable. Click on that. On the date directly above the timetable, click on a date when the school is open and you will see your child s timetable To print, go to the actions button on the right hand side. Parents of new students e.g First Years and new students throughout the school will receive login details before Friday August 28th.

  22. Private Music Lessons We will update the situation in relation to private music lessons in early September Some teachers are willing to teach online and all details will be on the web once we clarify the situation

  23. Boarding Students will operate within pods in the Boarding Houses. They will eat all meals in their respective pods. In the Dorms the numbers are greatly reduced and each child is given a specific individual space There will be no kitchens open and therefore no fridges available to the students An additional meal has been added to the day at approximately 8.45pm Boarders will be able to go over at their school breaks for a snack in the Dining Hall A matron will be available 24/7

  25. What about international students and our students returning from abroad? All international students are required to quarantine for 14 days in Ireland prior to joining the school. Any of our students who are holidaying outside of Ireland in a country that is not on the green list are also required to quarantine prior to returning to school

  26. My child is anxious about starting school/returning to school. What should I do? It is natural to be a little nervous about returning to school or starting a new school and we imagine lots of students and staff will feel the same. We very much want the return to school to be as happy and relaxed as possible. We encourage everyone to talk about how they are feeling with parents, family or friends In school any member of staff is available to help out We also have Form Teachers, Co-ordinators, Guidance Counsellor, Liaison Officer and Chaplain available for more personal support. We have introduced an additional well-being class on the timetable for all Junior Years

  28. Updates on Covid 19 As things tend to change rapidly with Covid 19 our protocols are subject to change. We will update our policies and communicate them to you as quickly as possible. The whole school community will need to work together and be flexible as things change and needs arise. We will add to the FAQs as we go throughout the year and continue to email parents with information as we get it.
