  1. Smart Home Technology State AT Program Leadership Symposium March 24-28, 2019 Liaison Capital Hill, Washington, DC

  2. Addressing the increasing acceptance of smart phone and smart home technologies. About three-quarters of US adults (77%) say they own a smartphone, up from 35% in 2011. From 2013 to 2016 the percentage of adults over 65 owning a smartphone has risen 24%, from 18% to 42%. In households earning less than $30,000 a year, smartphone ownership has risen 12%. Sixty-four percent of these lower income Americans now own a smartphone.

  3. What kinds of stuff are we talking about? Smart Home Technology Virtual voice assistants like Amazon Echo or Google Home. Smart Home hubs like Samsung Smart Things. Devices that connect to the hubs: thermostat, lightbulbs, cameras, door locks, etc. Remote Monitoring Someone outside the home is monitoring a person s health and safety. Could be family/caregiver or agency. Could involve door and furniture sensors, medication reminders, seizure detection, and more.

  4. Training related to Smart Home Technology Are you providing training on smart home technology? How many trainings have you been involved with in the last year? Who were the primary audiences for the trainings?

  5. Device Demonstration Does your program: demonstrate virtual voice assistants alike Amazon Echo and Google Home? demonstrate smart home hubs like Samsung Smart Things? demonstrate smart home devices that connect to the hubs? have smart home peripherals set up at one or more demonstration centers? At how many demonstration sites do you provide smart home technology demonstrations?

  6. Device Loan Does your program: loan virtual voice assistants like Amazon Echo or Google Home? loan smart home hubs like Samsung Smart Things? loan out smart home devices that connect to the hubs? have staff or contractors that go out to consumers homes to connect smart home devices?

  9. Other barriers Limited Wi-Fi connectivity in many places in the state (conference booths, homes and more). Security and privacy issues. So many choices and variables (and they re always changing). Many devices require an account to set up and many consumers don t always have what is required to set up their own account. Access to internet our office is state government (or university) and we re not allowed to connect IoT devices to the state WiFi system. Monthly program fees, internet access and inability to send staff to a home to help set up.
