Snowy Recess at Dixon All you need to know in the snow!
Whoa! It s snowing! What does that mean for recess? How does Dixon do things when it snows?
01 We go outside! At Dixon, we go outside for recess any time it is above 0 degrees including the wind chill. That s pretty cold! So be sure you are bringing coats, hats, mittens, scarves, and warm shoes like boots.
02 Why do we go outside in winter? There are many benefits of outdoor recess in winter, including what is called physical literacy! Physical literacy is your body s ability to move in a variety of environments. Being outside in winter on slippery or uneven surfaces helps your body build this skill!
03 When do we stay in? We have indoor recess if It is below 0 degrees It is raining hard We still go outside if it s snowing!
04 What if I don t like going out? Sorry, friend, everyone goes outside for recess. If you re well enough to be at school, you re well enough to go outside.
05 So what can we do outside? Snow and ice can give us unique and fun ways to play at recess! It is important that we all have the same ideas about what safe play in the snow looks like so we can all enjoy our recess.
Remember, you must have snow plants to play in the snow! This is because when snow gets on your clothes, it can melt and make you wet and soggy. If you don t have snow pants with you, you can still play, but will need to stay on the blacktop area.
SAFE & KIND YES YES Building Snow Forts Building Snowmen YES YES Climbing Snow Piles Making Snow Angels
NOT SAFE or NOT KIND NO NO Snow Fights Throwing Snow NO NO Pushing/Shoving on the Snow Destroying Other People s Buildings
More about Snow Forts and Snowmen Remember that it is your job to keep our recess safe and kind. We do not have wars at recess, and do not destroy other people s structures. Sometimes things get ruined between recesses, and that s okay! We can build more at next recess.
When CAN I have snowball fights? AT SCHOOL We never throw snow because it can hurt someone, even if we don t mean to. AT HOME If your family or friends all agree to have a snowball fight, that s totally cool!
Remember, you need to let the class that is already playing finish and line up before you play in their area!
