SOCIAL COMPACT Patriot Week lesson: 6th, 7th, and 8thgrade
Launch: What does it mean to have a relationship? Does your relationship between your parents function differently than the one with your friend? What about your relationship with your principal? Think-Pair-Share: turn to the person next to you and discuss what each role looks like in these types of relationships. Consider whether these individuals have shared power.
BIG IDEA: IN A DEMOCRACY SUCH AS THE UNITED STATES, THE CITIZENS HOLD THE MOST POWER.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT SERVES TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE SOCIAL COMPACT. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY KEY COMPONENTS OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SOCIAL COMPACT.

What is the Social Compact? Social Compact: a political theory term that defines the implicit relationship between a government and its citizens that results in a balance of power.
What is the Social Compact? The Founding Fathers were influenced by the Social Contract, which was an Enlightenment political document. The Social Contract outlined the agreement between a government and its people. The Social Contract states that the people consent to give up some of their rights to the government in order for protection.

The Enlightenment (1685-1815) Known as the Age of Reason Enlightenment philosophers: Rousseau, Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that occurred in Europe during the 18thcentury
The Enlightenment (1685-1815) The Enlightenment sparked radical political, religious and social changes throughout Europe and America. Influenced the Social Compact which had a direct influence on the Declaration of Independence. The Enlightenment had a major influence on individuals throughout Europe. Many members of the Third Estate became dissatisfied with their government because they felt their rights were not being protected.
What were some of these radical ideas? John Locke (1632-1704) Thomas Hobbes (15888-1679) Unalienable rights such as life, liberty and property were given to us by nature. Men are rational and self-interested. Feared the violent nature of men The government serves to protect these Unalienable rights Men will seek law and order as a form of self-protection Believed in a separation of powers. Believed in absolutism, meaning that the King or Queen has absolute power given to them by God and because God gave them ultimate power, they shouldn t be questioned. Promoted revolution as a means to achieve a government that served the interest of the people.
