  12. KEY NOTES AND POINTS I. Mercantilists encourage European rulers to establish colonies to obtain wealth. II. In 1607, the first permanent English colony in North America was started at Jamestown. Colonists came to Jamestown to make their fortune. QUICK CHECK #1: A.   13. KEY NOTES AND POINTS III. The Southern Colonies were the warmest of the English colonies and they had the longest growing season. Most of their settlers were spread out on farms. IV. A few Southern landowners had large plantations that grew cash crops- tobacco, cotton, rice, and indigo. They used enslaved African-Americans for labor The slaves were captives from Africa, brought across the Atlantic in cramped slave ships in the brutal Middle Passage.

  16. FINAL LESSON THOUGHT I. Some Southern Colonies were established primarily for the purpose of fulfilling the dreams of the mercantilists. Others were founded for different purposes. Identify the colonies that were established for reasons other than mercantilism. Please support your claim with evidence from this lesson.
