Understanding Acne Scars Almost half of the surgical dermatology practice consists of treatment of acne scars. There are different morphological types of acne and the effective treatment depends on diagnosing correctly. Understanding the severity of the scars, the depth of it and designing the treatment accordingly is the key. That is why, personalised treatment work the best. The majority of scars consists of pigmented scars. These are the acne that have healed but left behind its markers. It is common in brown skin individuals as the amount of melanin that is, the pigment of skin is more in brown skin that makes it prone for pigmentation.
Pigmented scars are a little easier to treat. The common treatments include depigmenting creams, chemical, peels, and lasers. All these treatments aim to decrease the amount of melanin in the scar and lighten the scar. Although the treatment is easy, it takes time. The usual treatment time is 3 to 6 months. Usage of sunscreen and mandatory sun protection is there to avoid risk of pigmentation and therefore, ineffective treatment. Another type of scars is depressed scars. The depressed scars are seen as craters and holes on the skin surface where previously acne was there. It is a matter of a lot of mental agony for many patients. Such type of scars are either genetically predisposed or occurr due to some kind of aggravation by the patient. Acne being inflammatory condition, becomes even worse when a person picks on them with nails or tries to pop the pimple as they say. All these things add up to the inflammation and increase the infection around the sebaceous gland where acne is present leading to formation of scars once the acne subsides. Since this scar is in dermis which is deeper layer of skin, superficial treatments, don t usually work. Treatments like micro needling, fractional CO2, laser ablation threats, et cetera, work by causing neo collagenosis that is new collagen formation. In addition to that, the fibrous brands tethering the skin in these scars must be broken. This is done with a procedure called subscision. Session by session, There is breaking of tethering fibrous brands improvement in collagen in the scar and scar improves.
There is a subtype of depressed cars called as ice pick scars. They are so named because of their narrow shape. They are deep like wells and triangular as they go deeper into the skin. These are particularly notorious as they often don t respond to conventional treatments. Expert treatment under professional care is needed to Improve them slowly. As as they say, prevention is better than cure. This could not be more true than the case of Acne scars. While acne is comparatively easier to treat with cream and tablets, scars often require procedural treatment and greater care. So the best advice is to treat the acne when it occurs And save yourself time and money. However, if you have acne scars, it is better to get treated under professional care in the best hands.
